Actually, in my best Eeyore-esque, grumpy-old-man way, I am dreading the day when the floodgates open up again. Heavy traffic, crowded places, expensive gasoline... yay.

We've been enjoying long walks in the neighborhood, often encountering (at appropriate social distances, of course) neighbors that we rarely saw previously & enjoying nice (and safe) chats with them.

That said, it will be nice to be able to actually buy rice, beans, toilet paper, and liquid hand soap again.

    :|

Speaking of beans, we grow black beans, so we have a pretty good supply "in stock" -- Mrs. H made a big ol' pot of a Cuban rice & beans dish for dinner Friday night. It was nommy, and will give us multipe meals via leftovers.

I would love for you to share that recipe for the beans and rice?

I am looking for 50-60 degree days so I can play outside more.

This I have been on the paved bike trails a couple of times did 23 miles yesterday. The off road trails in the woods at least the one I frequent is closed because of recent rains and snow melt. Mountain biking was made for getting dirty but the sponsors that maintain the trails dont want us out there tearing it up before it drys up enough.

Same here. They say riding the trails when wet will erode them. I don't mind getting dirty, let me ride my bike. If I didn't like getting dirty while riding I would have become a roadie.

I feel the pressure of all this being laid off from work and everything being closed except Gas and Grocery stores. It's a strange energy in the air. It feels lonely in many ways.
No kidding over here as I'm really not enjoying any part of this.

I'm actually not hating this shelter at home thing. I never really have much of a chance to enjoy my home. Working like crazy, weekends running errands, Sunday evening having to prep for work on Monday. Eat, sleep, you know the drill.

Now I get a chance to stay home all day long. Day after day. Day 7 or 8, IIRC. Almost warm enough that I can sit on my back porch and enjoy a coffee in the morning. Or a cigar in the afternoon! If this is a snippet of what retirement is, I kinda like it!

Sure I miss the interaction with folks. But that time will come. Sooner, rather than later, I feel it!

I am hating pretty much all of this so far. I have been staying hat home caring for my boy for three years now, and I looked forward to getting him out of the house on a daily basis. I am on the verge of insanity at this point.

I hope this isn't considered thread hijacking, but I would like to throw a couple ideas out there for you guys getting some cabin fever:

assuming you like board games and have a family/friend with the same game, Facetime/Skype/whatever them and play remotely, its a little time consuming (but hey, you guys should have some extra there) but one board can be the "live" board on the other friend or family member can run the "slave" board. This works for Monopoly, chess, and a myriad of games.

Also, assuming you live in a neighborhood and the weather is nice, host a lawn gathering for your neighbors. You can setup your guests about 6-8 feet apart and enjoy time together with actual humans.

The family and I have been out in the backyard enjoying kite flying. Tonight, we may have a bon-fire. All of our bikes are maintained and up to snuff as of today, the garage is cleaned and organized, we will be grilling Sous Vide Flank steaks tonight with homemade German potato Salad and a regular chef's salad.

The flowers are in bloom and our lawn is the thickest and greenest lawn I have ever had. The temps are wonderful, the stereo sounds better than it ever has, the house is clean, the wife and son are happy, healthy and still rolling with what's going on (big house and yard helps) and we are thankful and grateful that we are both able to work from home (I still need to go out but rarely).

Sorry to hear of your job loss, Dan. Would not wish that on anyone.

Got a good sous vide flank steak recipe you care to share? Been wanting to make some flank steak for a while. I was just going to grill it, but using the sous vide could be cool.

As for me, I’m sick of the social distancing thing. I like being able to go out and do things, and wanted to start on a new career, which this has basically forced me to delay.

On the plus side, I’ve gotten to listen to a lot of music on some new gear, spend time with the girlfriend, and work on house projects I’ve been putting off.

I was just about to apply for a job when this stupid thing started. So any one of the places that I was going to apply (Publix, Best Buy, and a few more.)

Although I doubt I would be allowed to since we went on lockdown a week or two before lots of people began to, so really I can't wait for my front door to open (figuratively, we still go outside.)

It’s tough because I agree, I don’t mind getting dirty mountain biking. But it does do a lot of damage to the trails if they get decent traffic. Around me, we have to be really careful. Trails around here are open to mountain biking because either a private owner is giving you permission, or the town/state itself is. If you make a mess, tear up the trail and are a nuisance, you’re going to lose trail access REALLY fast...

We just watched it happen with the Kingdom Trails network. A huge chunk was closed JUST to mountain bikers because a few refused to play by the rules and were rude. A huge chunk of the best trails were closed off to mountain bikers...

My apologies, I missed this post earlier.

Nothing special for us but our default flank is 131F@4-24 hours. We usually settle on around 8 hours. Dry completely when out of bath, slather a thin layer of mayo, cover with Spicy Montreal Steak seasoning and either sear with a hot a$$ CI pan or out on the grill for no more than 1 minute per side. Place a pat of butter on top and serve.

After the SV, it only takes about 6 or 7 minutes to prepare, sear and serve....11 to 12 if you tent and let it rest before serving, so have your sides ready to go within that time frame.

    Tom
