This morning, my son and I went to pick these babies up. 3 hundie, couldn't resist! :smile:

I'll post some pics later today, but overall these are in really nice shape! I was happy to discover that the electrostatic array could be disassembled from the woofer box, which made for easy handling and transportation!

    So I finally had a chance to play these babies after sitting in my basement un-assembled for a week. Today is Saturday after all, despite sheltering and working from home all week!

    I swapped them into the big rig, where I run the SRS's, so all things being equal. Well another thing. The MIT Shotgun's I run to the SRS's are bi-wire, which forced me to swap speaker cables as well. I had a pair of Signal Cable Ultra's single wire laying around, so I used those.

    I started out with electronic music. My new fave, Inks by Aes Dana, followed with Sub Conscious by Phutureprimative. Then some female vocals. I chose Silent Whispers by Evanescence.

    More to do with other genres, (5FDP and Tool in the queue) but here are my initial thoughts.

    Interesting, these speakers are a bit power hungry. I had to turn the volume up on the Cary a bit to get the same output as the SRS's. No worries as the MC300 handled it with ease.

    Inks by Aes Dana (title track) is a very nice recording, very detailed in percussion, and deep bass notes. Kinda dark, but has melodic twists and turns which keep you interested as you follow along.

    Sub Conscious by Phutureprimative (title track) is another one of my faves. Ambient for sure, but with the dub component that keeps you focused. Fluid, with easy beats and flow to keep you going.

    With both Aes Dana and Phutureprimative being similar genre's, I got the same overall impressions. The Spectra's certainly handled the detailed percussion effortlessly, all the while handling the dynamic melody without getting confused. Great resolution, in other words. Imaging was good, but much smaller than that of the SRS's. Toe in was very critical. Not a huge sweet spot either. I kept wanting to go beyond the physical location of the speakers, but got pulled back in. Depth was a bit smaller as well.

    Of course, I'm spoiled with the SRS's and being used to SDA technology!

    The bass notes, as expected, were not as far reaching as that of the SRS. Not a fair comparison, when doing a side by side with a 15" passive radiator to a 8" driver in a sealed cabinet. Distance from the wall is critical, as Acoustat recommends 3' minimum. Not very practical in a small room. The bass, that was there was tight, with good attack, and not the least bit boomy. Just not as deep. I would expect folks would be very satisfied when pairing these speakers with a good sub. Probably next on my list to try out!

    Now to female vocalists. Amy Lee is always my first choice, with her robust, yet having the ability to be delicate in the same song! And, I'm also a big fan of symphonic rock.

    Breathe No More by Evanescence (Lost Whispers) is a melodic, but dark song that has piano ballads, fluid bass, and intricate vocals.

    Amy's voice really shines on these speakers. Full, yet detailed, to the point where the inhales are quite evident. And then when she cranks out the fullness of her voice, the Spectra's carry them easily to the upper boundaries with ease. I'm really liking these Spectra's for this genre.

    So, more to come. I'm gonna play with these some more, add a sub, tweak the position, you name it. But overall, these are certainly keepers! And for me, a great bargain! :smile:

    I remember Acoustat
    Those planars present a VERY different sound from dynamic drivers. Just like the SDA's you MUST set up your listening room to suit THEM and NOT the other way around!
    They are not very high on the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor)scale because of that.

    Set the toe in to about 6" outside of each ear and leave them powered up for at least 24 hours before critical listening. (from a PO I visited when I was considering these) Main reason I didn't get these is the fact they need lots of room to breathe.

    Yep. Got plenty in the basement! I'll probably move them over to the secondary rig, 3' from the back wall, Acoustat says you can place them within 1' of the side wall, which will be perfect in that part of the room.

    Dave, I went thru the same situation your going thru with a set of Martin Logan Aerius I’s, I always wanted to try out a Electrostatic speaker, even though I heard all the criticism about them lacking dynamics, etc, also trying to locate the sweet spot, trying out different amplification,etc, but at the end of the day, for me it seemed they worked well with certain type’s of music, and they weren’t as dynamic as my other speakers, so I ended up letting them go. It was a good experience, and a good education about electrostats.

    Try them 2 ' 2.5 feet from the back wall instead of 3 and try to spread them out more if you can further apart and big tow in.

    Try jazz or classical on them. In my opinion thats the style of music they sound better on.
