Daytona 500 crash

Options
I haven't been much of a NASCAR fan in the last 10 years or so. I hadn't realized that the race was postponed from Sunday to Monday because of rain.( They're in cars, race in the rain) Any how,my buddy sends me a text at about 7:40 asking if I'm watching the race,I change the channel and put the race on. They finally get to the last lap,and "the big one " happens. This is just about the worst wreck I've ever seen.
Ryan Newman was leading, and then this wreck. He is in serious condition, but does not have life threatening injuries. Truly a miracle!!

Indeed a Miracle, I can't fathom how he survived that crash, good thing for the "Soft Barriers" as the initial hit was head-on. Ryan would have most certainly would have ended up like Dale E. if not for the Barrier.

But then to be hit square on into the drivers side, dang he's lucky!

I didn't watch it. Did someone take him out so that they could win the race or was it a true accident?

I have not watched much NASCAR at all since Dale's death.

To me, it just seemed like hard racing. Newman coming to the finish line for the win and blocking all he could, Blaney trying to get around him for the win doing everything he could. It didn't seem intentional at all to me. Hope Newman comes away OK.

I agree. This was just racing, and an unfortunate accident. The fact that he survived,is a true testament to the technology that goes into these cars. This was definitely one of the worst crashes I've seen. After seeing it,and the fact that they weren't just pulling him out of the car,I thought for sure it was a fatal wreck. Especially since they brought out the black screens. Thank God I was wrong!!

Very hard to call one train wreck after another racing.

One train wreck after another? I refer to that as "reality TV". :p

I like to watch the big tracks but the restrictor plates do nothing but make the cars bunch up and then it is just a matter of time before we get to see them playing car hockey.

Take the plates off and let them run it.

Seems like a lot of people stopped watching NASCAR about ten years ago - myself included. Back when I used to follow it, this was the worst wreck I’d seen. Not as spectacular as some, but for sheer force of impact...

As a huge Earnhardt and Nascar fan I have been watching less and less over the years since Dale JR. retired. When I saw the wreck Monday I was glad Jr. retired.
The fact that Newman is doing as well as he is is a testament to how much emphasis on safety. But it seams to me that there needs to be more done at the super-speedways. Remove the restrictor plate and put a chicane on the back-stretch, or instead of a chicane cut the rims down to half the width and see who can get the most out of that.

And yet we can't build a football helmet that will help with concussions any better.

maybe something like the Bose noise-cancelling headphones, but with a little more out of phase oompf?
