Christmas Trees and Latern flies

Options
Hello everyone,
did anyone hear of know of any issues with these damn things? This year my wife finally after several years of a fake white tree, she is allowing me to get a real tree again. Then she hit me with the Latern Fly issue she heard of and I'm trying to get some real world experience. For most of my life a real tree was apart of our Christmas and now that I can go back to that for this year, This Latern Fly issue is really bothering me. I read a few articles saying it's not like to be an issue but not a bad idea to check out. I never ever had any bug issues with any of our trees but of course now this.

Any opinions or experiences? I want to get a tree today or very soon.
Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time.

    "Latern" 3 times?

Well, at least you got your tree "apart".

I dunno -- we went down to the other side of our little village and cut one at the local Christmas Tree farm. Are these flies widespread (i.e., in the Northeast), or is this a Home Depot tree kinda thing?

The Spotted Lantern Flies are spreading like wildfire from southeastern Pa. supposedly came in on cargo ships at the ports from Asia and are destroying certain trees.

Well I learned something new this morning. Nasty little critters. Another invasive species from Asia.

How cold does it get where you live at night? Anything I buy used ,stays outside for four days in the winter to kill any bugs of any kind. In the warm months ,I roll the dice. Good luck. D

I am in SE Pennsylvania and places less than 10 miles away were covered in them last year. Everyone hates them. Unfortunately I saw my first Lanternfly at my house a month ago. So they are here now.

They have a strict quarantine in the infected area for commercial businesses. I am sure no one here can sell trees that leave the county. Technically this quarantine applies to individuals too. For the last 3 years it has been illegal for me to take an RV, wood, rocks or even a BBQ grill out of the county. But I have not seen any roadblocks at the county line so its good.

Spray your tree with about 1 part bleach to 8 parts water. Let it set for about 4 hours, hit it again. Let it set for 12 more hours. That should kill the bugs, larvae, and eggs.

Blow it off with about 50 psi compressed air to get rid of anything that survived.

Dang. That would sure mess up Christmas.
It'd make for holiday memories though.

They like "trees of heaven" i.e. Sumacs. Light oils mess with their avioli or spirical holes, and adding a little clove and citronella oils hastens their demise (personal experience). I have pines next door and never see them on those, so your Douglas fir should be ok.
