The Irishman

Its streaming on Netflix now, pretty good flick I love mobster movies and this is a good one. It's almost 4 hours long but the time flys me and the wife might just watch it a second time we enjoyed it that much. Anybody else seen it yet?

My wife and I saw it at a local theater last weekend and loved it as well. It is one of Scorsese's best films in a long time and, although it revisits the mobster theme of some his other movies, it has a very different take on that theme. And I agree that, although a long movie, it went by very fast. As I walked out of the theater, I told my wife that I wanted to see it again, like you said. I will watch it again on Netflix. It is a classic.

Good movie, too long though. There are some snooze fest moments. Make sure the theatre has very comfortable seating like recliners.

I watched it yesterday. I thought it was a very enjoyable flick despite being over 3 hours long. But I usually enjoy mob movies. DeNiro and Pesci have great chemistry between them as they work so well together. Al Pacino delivers a great performance as Jimmy Hoffa.

All played fantastic roles, but Pesci’s performance was absolutely amazing and should yield him some awards.

  • So this is streaming on Netflix AND playing in theaters at the same time??

Is it just me or is this setting some kind of new precedent?

The precedent was set by last year's movie, Roma, by the Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón. Roma was the first major movie to premiere on Netflix and it also had a limited (three week) run in movie theaters. I believe they have to show it in movie theaters, on at least a limited basis, in order to be eligible for the Academy Awards (Roma won 3 Oscars, including Best Director).

I just finished watching it. Reminded me way too much of Goodfellas. Same actors used by Scorsese (I believe Hoffa's wife was the girl who called from the house phone in Goodfellas and got them all pinched). Same narration over/throughout the film by the main character. Yes, the acting was pretty good but I didn't find Bobby D believable as a "kid" in this film. He just isn't young enough to play that part anymore. I agree that the film moved at a decent pace, as did Goodfellas - not surprising as the music and camera shots/angles used are all very similar.

Finally watched it and really liked it. Kind of lends itself to an "intermission" (or two); good movie to watch at home.
