Good thoughts for my boy Beans.....

Tuesday of last week, our 6 year old rescue (had him since he was 7 weeks old) went in for a "routine" teeth cleaning and to remove two very small precancerous skin tumors (one on his head and one on his paw). we got a call from the vet at around 6pm that he was done but needed to stay the night due to complications. They had to extract a molar and it would not stop bleeding so they had to put him back under, open the gum and pack it with coagulant and reclose. The small tumor on his hind leg was spidered under the skin and they could not get to all of the margins. He is extremely muscular (jack Russell / pit mix) and the skin was very tense. Fast forward to Friday and we had to take him in for follow up. Good news - his tooth/gums were fine. Bad news - the sutures didn't hold and he had an infection of the tissue. They added another antibiotic and had us monitor. Took him in yesterday - tissue was necrotic and they scheduled a debridement for this morning. Just got the call that the debridement went ok but there are concerning signs that his paw has compromised circulation and need to monitor closely over the next 3-4 days. Each day he will have to be dropped off, put under sedation and have the wound repacked and dressed. Each day they may have to surgically remove any "new" dead tissue. Vet stated that if the infection doesn't improve and if the tissue doesn't recover that amputation is a possibility. He is such a good dog and an active one (he literally takes daily 3 mile walks with my wife every day). I am afraid if he needs amputation it would drastically change him. I am really hoping he can turn the corner but sounds like it will be touch and go for at least a few days.

I know just what you are going through. Our Aussie had a tumor removed from her lower leg and that did not heal. They tried for several consecutive days of debridement.

It's such a hollow feeling when there's nothing you can do for your buddy except remain posiitve. Hope your outcome will be better with Mr. Beans.

Funny Shawn! Nipper is our tri-paw Aussie doggie, then we adopted Tucker. He was 2+ yrs old so we didn't want to change his name. Both are black and white and yes, we have Nip & Tuck. Cosmetic surgery anyone?

Hope Mr Beans is doing better on his next visit to the doc!

Thanks guys; appreciate all the well wishes. I went with him this morning and it took the vet, myself and two techs to hold him down while she debrided the wound and clipped away the dead tissue. I didn't want his sedated with anesthesia anymore as he has been under it three of the past seven days. He is doing well - however his paw is very swollen and the space between his toes is not a good color. Although the vet did comment that it looks better than yesterday. She wants to see him daily until Saturday to monitor the swelling, the viability of the tissue and the infection. Hopefully we are trending in the right direction. We got honey patches that we will replace daily after this week. Thanks for the well wishes, Beans and our family certainly appreciate them.

    Very misleading thread title...

I think you meant "...my boy, Beans" instead of "...my boy Beans". I was thinking you took a shot to your NADs...and I don't mean to your electronics rack!

I hope Beansy continues in the positive direction on his mending/healing trail. Best wishes and positive vibes for the big guy. "Thassa good boy!" :)
