Hd58x

I took a chance on a refurb set of hd58x. $112 to my door.
I don't see any Mark's or scratches. I even got the original box.
That I didn't expect. I'm pretty happy with how it works with the tablet.
I just hooked it up to the ASL mghead tube amp. So far the big thing for
Me it doesn't have as much a soundstage as the hd650's. The highs are
A bit rolled off, but it's not as dark sounding? Odd. You'd think less highs
Would make it sound darker. I haven't had the 650's for a few years.
Not a bad purchase for the $$. If I didn't have a Stax here these would
Get a lot of use. They were for just tablet use, but I may have to put
Them in rotation for a while. I have been bidding on hd58x for a year.
They seem to go for $130 to the door on fleabay. This one was a buy it now
With two sets available. I see too many people bidding some up to
Close to new price after shipping. I refuse to ever be one of those guys.

Ok. So after some run time.
The 150 ohms of these are too low for otl mode and really too high for the transformer output. I hooked them up to the sansui au717.
They really came alive. Lesson here, synergy is important.
These don't play well with the tube amp.
I'll have to pull out my mini ss headphone amp at some point.
For now, the sansui easily drives them and sounds pretty good.
I was starting to wonder if these were a good idea.
The only issue that comes to mind is it has a small soundstage.
We'll see what a couple more days does for this.

ok, so using the IBasso anaconda really opened things up.
It's hardy the top of the line amp. But it plays well with the Senns.
The soundstage still isn't up to Stax level, but few things are.
Dynamics are good as well as balance of the music.
I guess if I stick with it, I'll have to come up with something else like a
Minimax or M^3. My AKG Q701 was a chal1ege to get the proper sound
and hard to drive. It really needs a new home. I have a 20ft Cardas cable
that I modded from Senn to AKG connector. I'll be re-terminating it again to
    Senn connectors.

    Tweaking done for now.
Back to the asl tube amp. Non-otl mode with feedback enabled.
Dropped in a RCA 7025 in the middle. Good to go!
I go new Senn connectors and coverted back my 20ft cardas cable
For the 58xs. Sounding very good. The best part is 15 years ago the
cable was a freebe from a guy selling me an almost new set of hd650's.
It needed new connectors, and at that time you couldn't buy them.
This is the 3rd re-terminate, so it's more of a 19ft cable now.
I really never quite got the hd650's to sound the way I wanted.
Same with a set of Akg q701's. These now have a balanced sound
With a decent soundstage. I could easily use these instead of the stax
And not lose to much sound. Buying a higher end set of cans
(Non-stax) would of cost $$$. I got this done with stuff on hand.
