Should I turn my Pass XP-22 off when not being used?

Before the XP-22 I had an XP-20. The 20 didn’t have a power switch, so it was on all the time. A couple of years ago I upgraded to the XP-22, and it does have a power switch. After getting it I have left it powered on all the time. A few months ago it developed a problem, but is now repaired and working fine. However, I wonder if I had powered it off when not being used if it wouldn’t have broke. I listen to my stereo on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, but the pre is on all the time.

As an experiment, I am going to start turning it off when shutting down Wednesday morning, and Sunday morning. Unless someone can make a good point about leaving it on 7/24. Thanks.

The older Pass stuff has no power button. I can only assume that they put one on the XP22 for a reason Bud. Looking over the manual, it make no mention of being left on at all times for best performance. I would say power it up a couple hours before use and try it.

John, that’s my thinking at this time. However, I read somewhere that the power switch was added to be compliant with government regulations. Anyway, I will try powering it off, and turning it on the morning of a music night. Thanks.

I leave my gear on 24/7 for the most part.

I turn stuff off; soiled state stuff I would probably leave on -- as with internal combustion engines, most of the stress on electronic components is associated with the turn on stress/transients, to the best of my knowledge.

Older folks here will remember incandescent light bulbs. ;)
When they fail, it's usually at turn-on -- rare to see one die while operating (i.e., in the steady state).

All of this being said, thanks to the good ol' Second Law of Thermodynamics, even an idling class AB circuit is not 100% efficient, the "delta" being lost as heat -- and heat is the enemy.

Indeed, that was the logic applied in the 1960s that convinced stereo hobbyists to abandon their old-fashioned, heat producing, microphonic, prone to fail, vacuum tube equipment for that space-age transistor stereo equipment. :p

    It's the medication.

As long as he's not performing for more than four hours at a time...
