I KNEW I liked Art Dudley :)

From 2012(?!) -- not sure how I'd missed this 'til today... heck, I still subscribed to the ground up tree version of Stereophile back in 2012.

YMMV, of course.

I read Stereophile, my suspicion is Mr Dudley would not (be allowed to) write that article today.

I was kind of surprised to see it from 2012 ;)

FWIW, I still sort of follow Stereophile online, but I haven't gotten an offer for a print subscription for less than $8 (my cutoff) for a few years, so I don't get it in paper no mo'. :|

The one thing I like about Stereophile is that they try to at least pay lip service to both the left and right brain hemispheres ;) in their reviews. JA's measurements of the products they review were/are always interesting to peruse. Beats https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?reviews/ all to heck. :#

I'm a big fan of USED gear. You know, stuff that's dropped a lot in value.
Other than McIntosh, most of this stuff goes into freefall a few years
after it's sold. And a lot of it doesn't measure up.
In the used market, reviews are more reflective of performance, not
how much marketing has been done.

"Real" Altec, JBL, and Western Electric stuff has - ahem - held its value rather well, too. ;)

    As have, e.g., Marantz's models 8B and 9 amplifiers.

Heck, the early Polk "Monitors" have, too.

It's just that audiophile stuff from the last decade or two that drops like a rock in value as one's factotum is loadin' it into one's Corniche.

yeah, vintage stuff has gone crazy.
A lot of that is over hyped as well.
Cool to look at, but you can buy great
Used modern gear that will sound better.

A matter of some difference of opinion, I would counter. :)

Actually, and perhaps ironically, not much of my big hifi is actually vintage. Some of the tubes in the amplifier are old enough to collect Social Security (and then some); the drivers in my loudspeakers have a fair amount of age on 'em (the woofers are about the same age as me) and the tuner I use is from the 1960s... everything else is pretty modern.
