Only from great experience with Synology on my 2nd one due to growth spurts . now with the 4bay DS918+ customer service is amazing. DS Audio app is amazing and performance is amazing. Am I a fan of Synology?? Oh yeah. Equipped with 4 10 TB Seagate Iron Wolf drives all run quiet and smooth. Started with a 2 bay and loved that too.

The one you listed wouldn't grab my attention. 3 stars??

Yeah might get this one instead with 2 4tb Seagate Iron Wolf hard drives instead a bit more but probably a better choice for streaming.

I have an older slower Qnap that works fine for music, I am not sure about video. A four bay is probably not much more and you can just use two to start out. BTW I will never use Seagate drives again, I have had like a half dozen fail premamturely over the years. WD has done good by me.

All companies that offer drives have a good better best offering. All relative.

@tophatjohnny back in the day I don't remember them having quality levels, I just bought what was on sale at newegg and Seagates never lasted the WD's still run.

Yeah brother they all do have step ups. Iron Wolf drives are amazing but ya pay a premium for them. WD Reds are pretty good too. IME

As a person who owns a western digital ex2 for several years, it has not failed me BUT, the apps i want it to run i either cannot load or runs horrible on. 1 plex. It runs like cr@p on it. 2 minimserver. In my rig, minimserver is a fast small program that lets my streaming devices see everything in proper order and tagged right. The dnla on the ex2 doesnt. Since it wont let me put minimserver on it, I wish i would have went with qnap or Synology since they both let you run apps on them NOT from their "store".

Yeah I think I'm leaning towards the Synology DS218+ I hope this one will do the trick.

I don't know when WD started that all the colors in the raidbow stuff but they didn't have it back when I used to buy a lot of drives.

They didn’t have the color coding but they definitely had different levels of product available...consumer and enterprise SATA, SAS for server use, SAS for storage array use, etc.

These days though, you have more people asking specifically for NAS or a drive for gaming or a drive for power savings...

Steve, those Iron Wolves are solid enterprise drives. Depending on how far in the deep end you want to go, the WD Reds will be a solid option for you. No real need to look into stuff like the HGST HE series drives (helium to reduce internal turbulence inside the drive and allow for less bearing wear due to more stable platter rotation).

Same here, I've only purchased what was on sale. However, I've had a Seagate and a not that old WD go bad. I currently use a USB WD for my stuff but am thinking about going to a Synology NAS at some point.

Go with a Synology and spend a tad more than you can afford for more bays. With their ability to expand RAIDS, the extra bays will be worth it soon.

As stated above, I would spend more to get a 4 bay as well. I had a two bay and then two years later upgraded to a 4 bay.

I have two 4TB drives and two 8TB drives in my 4 bay Synology. The 4TB drives are in Raid 1 (Mirrored) as well as the 8TB drives. While this is not a "backup", it does provide a safety net if one of the drives fail. You can then take out the failed drive and put in a new one and it will start the mirroring process again. This would prevent you from losing all your music if one drive suddenly starts failing. I had this happen, and never again. So even though I have 24TB of space, I'm only really utilizing 12TB as these are in RAID. Worth it for me.

Good luck. Synology NAS are awesome.
