Monitor 70 or RTi A7 for home theater

Folks,

I am little confused if i have to buy a pair of Monitor 70 or RTi A7 for my FL/FR 5.2.4 home theater setup. I have fixed/reusing below setup but still confused on the floor standing speakers. Suggestion helps.

Room size: 20' x11' approx
Receiver: Denon x4500H 9.2 channel
Rear : Polk 265RT
Atmos: 70RT
center : CS10
Sub: PSW10

Again, I need help with Floor standing.

Well that center would match the monitor 70s more than it would the A7's. If it were me I would get the A7's and the CSI A6 for your front stage and a amp to drive them. Welcome to the forum.

  • Thanks. This helps me take off M70 from the list.

If i can slightly increase my budget to go with A7s and matching center Csi A6 this is how my 5.4.2 setup looks,

    Receiver: Denon x4500H 9.2 channel
    Front: Polk RTi A7
    Rear : Polk 265RT
    Atmos: Polk 70RT
    center : Polk CSi A6
    Sub: Polk PSW10 - 2 ( front and back )

    1) With A7s, do you think still i need to upgrade subs to PSW505? Note: i am using two PSW10s - one in the front and one in the back.

    2) if PSW10 is fine, will i need two of them ( front and back) for this setup as i use a solid rear?

    3) I understand A7s are more power driven and in order to get its full potential, will my denon x4500 ( 125w/ch) suffice or should i be looking for more powerful receiver ( something like Marantz SR7012 - 200w/ch or similar)

    Welcome to Club Polk!

I would upgrade the subs at the very least to two PSW505s, or better yet two SVS PB1000s.

Your receiver is fine, but plan on saving for an external amp of at least 200wpc to drive the front stage to their full potential.

Don’t bother getting a more powerful receiver. Get the receiver that has the features you want/need and preouts, and save up for an external amplifier.

One good sub would be much better than those two psw-10s. They only extent to about 40hz and the port chuffing can get out of hand at decent volumes. They really aren’t “sub” woofers, especially when your mains can go just as low (with the proper power). Yes, either an SVS pb-2000 or an HSU VTF-2.5 or 3.5 will destroy even two psw-505s. The HSUs are the slightly better value. I have the 2.5 and love it...

Other than the sub and lack of an amp the setup looks great! And you can definitely go without an amp for a while.

A friend had dual 505's said it rocked. I took my old STF2 over and it blew his dual setup away. A good quality sub is much better than two soso subs.

PSW-10 is a bass box not a sub, it does go will with "T" series.

Get a good sub and AVR with preouts so you can add an amp later. RTi shine with a good amp added.

I agree, I've been there. And what a difference a good powerful sub makes in the set up...……..IMO it's everything!

I have to admit I am surprised by this. Ed Mullen reviewed both the 505 and the STF2 and the measurements were quite similar IIRC. The only caveat is that Mullen put EQ on the 505, which doesn't seem fair in a review since most people aren't going to buy a big box sub and then add an expensive EQ device...

  • Thanks all.

    1) If am going with a powerful sub like SVS or HSU and having CSi A6 for the center channel, will RTi A5 be good enough compared to A7 ?

    2) Do i need two powerful subs ( front and back?) for my setup? can i use the SVSs or HSUs in the front and reuse my PSW10 in the back?

Sure, just put your old sub in the back. Either speaker choice should be fine.

If you go with a good sub and the A5s, you can more realistically just use the Denon and set the crossover at 80hz and rock on. You would still benefit from an external amp, but not nearly as much. So, if you don't want to buy the amp I would recommend the A5s.

Doesn't hurt to try the PSW-10 in the back, but I doubt you'll notice any improvement honestly...
