Pass XP-22 preamp broke last night

So, I have the time between Xmas and New Year off, and last night I was taking advantage of that and enjoying the stereo on a weeknight, when the left speaker started popping. A loud popping also. I turned the volume way down, but that didn’t help, so I shut the amps off. I was thinking it was the left amp going bad, but this morning I swapped the preamp output cables, and the popping went to the right speaker.

Whew. Boxing up the preamp is a lot easier than a 125 lb amp. :)

Today I reinstalled my Cambridge Audio 840E preamp, and it’s been playing fine since this afternoon. Since it has been idle for 4-5 years I was a bit nervous, but so far so good. I am a little disappointed the Pass broke, but at least I have music till it is returned.

Sounds very good, maybe 80% of the Pass, but at a much lower price. There is some high frequency hash, but I can live with it.

This Cambridge Audio is really sounding good as it warms up. Anyone want to buy a Pass XP-22?

    Hope it's fixed soon.

I think you just jinxed yourself the other day when on another thread you mentioned the Pass Labs being extremely reliable. j/k...

Nothing is invincible, but I believe Pass has great CS and will get you back running in no time.

I am not superstitious, or into any religious mumbo jumbo, but I have been wondering if I did jinx myself talking about it. LOL. :)

Does it have warranty at this point? Or is it on your dime? I feel like you just got it.

It’s under warranty. Pass is now expecting it. I will either ship it tomorrow or Monday. I am actually enjoying my Cambridge Audio 840E preamp now. :)

Received word that it shipped today, and I will get tomorrow, Saturday. The 840E has done an excellent job as a stand-in, but it will be nice to go back to the XP-22. Now I have to clean the rack and the room so it will give the XP-22 a nice welcome. :)

Don’t know. Most likely some component went bad. As long as it works, that’s all I need to know.

    Rock on, Bro . . .

I'll assume Pass CS is 2nd to none?

I'm dabbling in the idea of pairing an old Aleph 30 with a newer Pass pre . . .

Unfortunately, things didn't work with the pre @nooshinjohn was offering

The Pass XP-22 preamp has been on since last Saturday, and is now really warmed up. So far not a peep of unwanted noise, and is sounding better than before it broke. However, the improvement also can be from my upgrading the Lumin S1 with the X1 power supply while the Pass was being repaired. I was going to buy a Lumin X1 in March, but just might stay with the S1 since it sounds so good.
