CL has a listing for a Breville BES840XL, The Infuser, unused (a gift to someone who only drinks coffee). Can I assume that it should perform the same as the one with built-in grinder, the ...870...?

It is the same exact machine minus the grinder and a bit of a smaller water tank. It will perform the same! Go for it if the price is right, they are wonderful machines, and thanks for the kind words!

Well, I went and bought the Breville. It’s virtually brand new, but the owner misplaced the manual so I’ll just use the online version. I conditioned it last night and will try to pull some shots this morning. If it weren’t for this thread, I probably would have ended up with someone else. Thanks everyone.

Seller wanted $299 and I didn’t try to negotiate. He went and bought a Technivorm with the money. I’ll be dialing it in for awhile, but the second and third shots were way better than the first try.

Nice! No pics of mine, but I’m liking the Americano I’m having now. The first morning, the old Baratza had to be set to 0-1 on the grind setting (0-40) to get a decent extraction. Then the mail came and so did a hopper extender and a new ring burr that I ordered. I’m not sure if it was due to wear or the fact that the plastic carrier of the original burr was cracked, but the new burr made a big difference and now the best shots are at around 6. I have yet to play with the programming or frothed any milk.

Haha this is strictly an amateur gig :) I’ve got a great, well paying job that will do just fine for at least the next 12 years or so

So far, I’ve made milk-foam blobs and lines. Tastes great, though. A newly retired friend who likes his Americanos was curious and came over for one. I likely made his head swim with all that I learned about espresso machines. He’s pretty impressed with the Breville. I like how it automatically purges a little water after steaming so you can pull a shot without much of a wait. A good purchase.

I finally finally after months of trying made a latte that looks as good as it tastes with my Breville barista express. Love this espresso machine more and more every day! aia93snp29my.jpeg

Has anyone with a Breville espresso machine played with program functions or manually adjusted the infusion or shot times? If so, how do you like the results?

I have programmed all my shot times. Really a necessity to get consistent shots. Just understand you have to do it after each coffee bean/grind fineness/ tamp setting

I took a 2-hour “Home Barista” course at Clive Coffee last Saturday. It was limited to four students, each given a fairly high-end machine, grinder and scale to use. After some lectures and Q & A, we were set loose on the equipment, which all had the grinders well off the proper grind. We slowly dialed in the right grind to yield the standard recipe the Clive teaches: 20 grams of coffee which yields 30 grams of espresso in a shot time of 25 seconds for a short shot (ristretto). They teach these short shots because they believe that they stand up to milk drinks best. Then we were taught the basics of milk steaming. Time flew by as I probably pulled 20 shots and steamed several pitchers of milk. We ended by making our favorite drink. A good course, but I’m not sure if I can duplicate this recipe on my Breville.

Mine was a LUCCA A53 Mini by La Spaziale. LUCCA is Clive’s branded machine. All grinders were Baratza Sette 270s. It was fun and we got a discount on accessories following class. One guy took home the machine he ordered earlier. A LUCCA M58 By Quick Mill, $2695. Another expensive hobby.
