4k bluray player recommendation

Hello
I already have a Xbox one S, but was wondering what would be a 4k bluray player that is better, and does a great job at upscaling standard bluray as well
And without breaking the bank !
Thanks

Any chance to find better than xbox one s but much cheaper than $500?
Ex: what about the Sony UBP-X700 ($150 at BestBuy right now)? It does Dolby Vision on top of it...

Get the UBP-X700 the UBP-X800 wont do Dolby Vision and Sony has no plans to have an update for the X800 or the X1000. I own both the X700 and the X800 and both do a fine job of upscaling DVD and Bluray, plus playback on SACD, DVD Audio and Blu Ray Audio discs. You cant go wrong with the X700 at that price.

The lg up870 is excellent for blu ray and 4K. Doesn’t do anything else, but you don’t need anything else with your Xbox. I got mine refurb for $50. Don’t know if you can still find that deal...

Well that's super lame... Bottom tier gets the upgrade and for those who spent the extra money get bubkus.

I've read some reviews and it seems the LG UP870 and the Sony UBP-X700 are similar in terms of image quality (with more apps on the Sony)
Big question is: will I see a noticeable difference compared to my xbox one S?

As far as strictly video quality, I don’t think you will see a difference between the x-box and 700.
  • Do you know if the xbox one s upscales regular bluray into 4k as the Sony is supposedly doing?
When upscaling, which device is better at that task: the player (or console), the receiver or the TV?

Not to derail, but does the x700 have a whine while it's playing a disk?

Not that I know of it's in our bedroom hooked up to a big Zvox sound Bar so never payed attention. It's a bit noisy while loading the disc initially but I have not experienced any whining.

I think the X800 is the best value in players under $500.00 It comes in at $299 but I bet you can find it better then that since it's been out since last year.
If you like the X700 I have one with about 2 weeks of use on it and maybe just a few movies and a few SACD's I ran in it. I grabbed a Oppo 203 and now the X700 just sits in it's box with no where to go.
PM me for a price with shipping.

Typical Ebay price in December on a UDP-203 with box with remote is still $900 and up. Some are selling for double the original price.

If people are willing to pay that then it's worth it. I'm not selling mine as I really like it unless the Pioneer Elite UDPLX500 really impresses me which I'll have here soon.

The Sony UBXP700 or 800 are decent units and there are Boxing Day deals to be had now.
My first 4K player was a Philips BDP7501.
They can still be had for around $99 or less now.
It has performed flawlessly for my and I have to say the picture quality of both 4K and upscaled Bluray disks is impressive on my bedroom 4K panel.

  • A dedicated player will get better quality. A cheap Sony will do so. Whatever player you get think about the tweaks you can do to it for great results. Depends how far you want to go

It really depends on your display...

If you have a 4k-ish PJ then you need a player that can deal with HDR issues...
So right now the Panasonic ub820 is the hottest player on the market.

If you are using an OLED... once again you are dealing with low light output and black crush on the lower levels.... so the Panasonic ub820 is the player for you.

If you are using an LCD then I suggest getting the best player you can afford but really purdy much any 4k player will work for you.

I have 2 OPPO 203's, 103D and 105D and while they are great players with a long line of excellent build quality and reliability the 203 just cant do HDR. The ub 820 and newly released ub9000 are the new king's
