Yama P2201 I switched it on heard a thump speakers blown

Dont worry the speakers were only Beovox S30.

The loud thump was not bassy but more of a midrange sound.

What is wrong with this Yamaha P2201 and how do I fix it?

I don't believe there's a speaker relay on that model. Use a multimeter and check for dc voltage at the speaker terminals.

Check for DC on the outputs. A bad driver or output transistor could be passing all or part of one of the DC "rail" voltages straight to your speakers, with catastrophic results.

The other, very real possibility, that comes to my mind is that there's a severe, but transient, imbalance in the power supply at turn-on that results in a very low frequency (or DC) voltage before the amp stabilizes. Many solid state amplifiers have relays to protect the speakers from such things, but yours apparently does not. In such cases, speakers make excellent fuses (unfortunately).
  • How do i check dc voltage? Its time I learned how to use a multi meter....

No signal applied to amp, no speakers connected, amp output to speaker terminals "on".
Measure for DC voltage across each channel's output terminals. Red lead of DMM to positive terminal, black to negative. Value should be very close to zero volts (see the AK sticky for info).

Take it to a qualified repair shop. Get an estimate, then decide if it's worth fixing or used as a boat anchor.

This is the best answer of all.

He said £70 but I rather fix it myself.

I fix all speakers a Beogram 4002 and a few other repairs by luck.

My Dad found two dead capacitors probably using a multimeter but he is psycho and has bad communication skills he used tippex and wrote all over the amp 'don't use will kill speakers'

    "Haven't used a DMM" + "fix it myself" =

Spend the 70 quid & get it properly repaired and calibrated. The P2201 is probably a worthwhile investment for repair.

Spend the coin, fixing the amp, or spend more coin fixing the speakers. Your call.

Even if you fix what's broken it's still an amp with no dc protection and still capable of ruining speakers or worse yet starting a fire. I say chalk it up to experience and use this as excuse to find a better amp.....preferably one that isn't a fire hazard.

The early Adcom GFA series don't have relays either. I like to live dangerously.
