Any Road Bikers out there?

Been riding on the road here for about a year now and just treated myself to a new bike...

Trek Domane SL 5 56 CM
I upgraded the seat with a Selle Italia Max SLR Gel
Put a set of Shimano A530 SPD Dual Pedals

This bike with the carbon frame and decoupler technology in the fork and seat areas is a bit more comfortable than my previous Domane.

I now ride almost every day and am enjoying the level of fitness cycling brings as my knees are in pretty bad shape and the cycling is definitely helping with making them stronger and reducing pain.

I vary my rides in 15 to 30 mile and tend to take a 5 minutes stretch on the 25 and 30 mile rides.

I want to build up to 50 miles and would like to know how you guys may have been able to get there.

I can average app 14.5 MPH on the new bike which is almost 1 MPH faster than the old one. I can hit 28 in a sprint about 2 MPH faster.

My problem isn't physical fatigue but that I get uncomfortable in the saddle for that long.

2 hrs is about my max right now.

How do I build that up? More riding? More rest? Lose more weight... Better bike shorts...All of the above?

My New Year's resolution is 3840 × 2160

Better bike shorts like pearl izumi elites bibs are what I found to help. Dont wear underwear! I worked at a bike shop for 7 years and it was amazing how many people didn't know that. Make sure the saddle is level and at the right hight. More time in the saddle will help. If you don't find it comfortable try a different saddle.

Or you could try recumbents. I've gone 100 miles without getting off the bike. Not one person I know has gone back to traditional bikes after they have spent a week riding a recumbent.

Pictured is the bike I rode from my home in OKC to the Kansas state line one day.

I ride as well and did Ironman. Train harder and make sure you get proper amount of rest. I do majority of my riding indoor on my specialized shiv on my wahoo trainer using Zwift. Able to focus on workouts without the outdoor distractions of cars and intersections. When I do ride outside I am either on my Scott addict, niner rlt gravel bike or niner Jet mtb. More riding will make you faster and more fit obviously.

Very nice bike - congrats! +2 for the above, I found that better bibs really paid off, that and the old maxim, find a saddle your sitz bones like, that's more important than looks, price, color, anything.

Like you, I rewarded myself and moved up from a Giant OCR-A1 to a CF Specialized Roubaix, and gained about 1MPH. I've been out in the 40 mile range, but have yet to hit 50, though time is more of a constraint usually than fitness or saddle.

I know there are varying opinions on them, but I found a bike fit added another MPH and a lot more comfort.

Mountain biker here, and a weight weinie, don't like my bike to weigh hardly anything, so don't go for padded saddles use padded bike shorts, go commando, I usually do a few hundred off road miles a year, but take advantage of riding the flows and downhills not being on the saddle in a standing position occasionally takes a lot of stress of the (ahem) crotch area. It can get pretty numb down there the first few rides but if you keep at it it gets easier and less pain the more you ride.

I got to respect you road riders though, I try to stay off asphalt, as much as possible I did ride ragbri once partial on a mountain Bike and paid for it dearly for a few days after the ride, won't do it again. I prefer off road riding.

@Viking64 your riding position is not optimized. Maybe a little more saddle height - currently too much bend in your knees!

I have to agree with the a more "custom fit" saddle.

I got fitted for a Specialized Phenom years ago and I will never go back.

Carbon seat pan is a butt saver, for real.

Went out for a ride today, thanks to the freak warm patch that came through upstate NY today.

Not a lot of milage, since the path I like to ride was soggy and like riding through peanut butter...

I would try and reduce the amount of spacers under your stem slowly.

That bike is designed for cheating the wind and aero gains. You’re killing the engineers by sitting up that tall, acting like a huge sail!

Unless you have an injury that’s limiting mobility, you should be able to slowly work your stem down the steerer tube and get yourself into a much more efficient position and still be comfortable.

I actually have my fat guy, post winter stem on right now! It’s 10mm shorter than my normal stem and a zero rise stem, I’ll also move an extra spacer under the stem. Once I get back in shape and gain back some flexibility, I’ll put my normal stem (6* drop, 90mm stem) back on and work on getting that extra spacer back on top!
