So I have a Marantz NR1508 receiver along with:
- SVS PB12-NSD subwoofer
- Polk S20 bookshelf speakers

So it's a 2.1 setup right now. I get alot of the bottom end with the PB12. I was thinking of adding a center channel in the mix for better / clearer dialogue during movies.

People keep telling me that 1" to ~4" drivers are better for higher pitched sound, ie. peoples' voices in movies, etc..

Should I go with the S30 or S35?

I can't tell you from personal experience the difference between those two, as I haven't heard either outside of best buy.

However, I will tell you that all the best center channels I have owned had at least 5 inch woofers...6.5 is probably ideal.

Think about it this way. Do you think that your s20s reproduce vocals well in music? They have 6.5 inch drivers, so why would they work as a center? The main advantage of a center is for recordings in 5.1 or greater where the dialogue is isolated (mostly) to the center channel, and most music and other sounds come out of other speakers.

As a general rule, get the biggest, baddest center channel you can afford and space/WAF will allow...

It's a toss-up in my book, having heard both. S30 costs less, S35 looks nicer, IMO. Smaller drivers, but more of them.

but the S35 offers a little more clarity to the midrange.

That's some of what I'm after. Aesthetics plays a part as well. I'll wait and try out the S35 then.
