Computer help needed with camcorder connection

Hey guys,

I stumbled across my old JVC Mini DV recorder and some old tapes, from 2001 and a few years afterward.

It uses a firewire connection to the computer so I ordered a card for it from Amazon, this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QY7M3Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

h6jswunuettk.jpg

I installed the card, the computer loaded up the software and good to go....or not??

I can't get the camcorder to connect and show up as anything?? Under the device manager I got it to show under imaging devices, see below.

The software that came with the camcorder is old (see below) may need something newer - any advise?? I want to be able to save the video to my computer and then edit it and save as another file.

Any help is much appreciated.

Are you just turning the camcorder on and plugging in the firewire? Do you need to open the video gallery to view in the camcorder?

Basically yes, the software seems to want me to set a com port. Can't find a way to do that.

    What is the video gallery??

I believe what you need to do is use that JVC software or Windows Movie Maker to "import" the video off of the player.

Open the LCD screen of the camcorder and set it to preview mode. Then go into the menus in either application and choose something like File -> Import.

Then what you'll essentially be doing is playing back the video and simultaneously capturing it into the computer. It'll take at least 1:1 time to do it, meaning 1 hour of video will take 1 hour to capture into the computer. 1 hour will be about 10-13gb of hard drive space used, btw.

Let me know if you have any other questions, but finding the option to "import" the video into the application is the key.

*The software doesn't seem to work on this computer.

Seems I need to select a serial port, but it won't let me so it doesn't see a device connected.

Yeah, sounds like that software is quite old. I don't think firewire ports map over to serial port allocations. I would try to find a different piece of software to use.

Try searching on your start menu for Windows Movie Maker. IIRC Windows 7 comes with this software preinstalled.

well you could find a company that can do it. My cousin runs one near me and many local's have something similar. Many want their old VCR tapes moved to DVD or something so there are companies out there that do it. Might save you some headaches. Might also be a wash in cost by the time you buy stuff to do it ONCE yourself.

I might be wrong, but I believe the limitation you are experiencing is software in nature, not hardware.

You might look into other software like Sony Vegas but you'll have to pay for it. There might be a few video capture software applications that would all you to try them out before buying, to see if you can at least make the physical connection to the camera.

  • I am having the same issue with my Cannon ZR900, I last used it January of this year and had no issues, but now nothing happens when I connect it to the fire wire. checked with cannon site for update for drivers, no luck, win 10 says I have the best software for the device.

I have had to use my phone as my video camera for now on, and that's not cool when you really want a higher quality project.

I think I was having to use Windows Movie Maker to pull the video off my DV recorder a few years back.

If you don't have Movie Maker, you can install it on Windows 7, 8, or 10 with the Windows Live Essentials installation software. It looks like Microsoft doesn't have links to the software anymore, so if you can't find the software to download, I have a copy archived. Let me know and I will give you a Google drive link later tonight.

Edit: I haven't tried this, but found a link to a web archive:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20170112124505/http:/wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/C/1/B/C1BA42D6-6A50-4A4A-90E5-FA9347E9360C/en/wlsetup-all.exe

The software is a full suite, but you can de-select everything except Windows Movie Maker (and perhaps Photo Gallery). Let me know if this doesn't work.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

All good, glad you got it sorted out in the end.

Of course it's Microsoft, so they never make anything easy!

Hope you're enjoying your old vids. It's so much easier with the new cams that use SD cards to move around and store footage!

I am trying to make a couple DVD’s for my 81 year old mother for Christmas. I have some of our family gathering for Christmas that have her mother in them. A lot of the family getting up and singing songs including my mother and her 2 sisters. They are from 2002 to 2005.

Then I have some of my 17 year old daughter during the same time period.

So, this means a lot to me.

Very thankful for all the help here.

Best or easiest? You can get fancy editing, adding transitions, graphics, intro music, etc. or you can just arrange them all in one ~1hr video and burn it to disc.

Windows Movie maker is probably the easiest.

Lots of choices if you want to get fancy...Pinnacle, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, etc. Something called Open Shot (no experience, but its rated high). I haven't done much movie editing since around 2004, so I'm out of the current software loop.

  • Just did some research on this issues and its a Win 8-10 issue. Microsoft Fail to put in the drivers to support Firewire connection in general, so that includes Cameras, sound cards and any other devices that may uses these type of port. There has been some success by going with an older version driver from Win XP or 7 but not 100% effective in all cases.
