Magnifi One Soundbar won't pair with Sony Bravia IR remote.

I followed the instructions in the soundbar manual for IR remote learning but can't seem to get it to work correctly with my Sony TV remote. After attempting to program it all the Sony remote does is raise the volume whether I'm pressing volume up or down or the mute button. Nothing works to lower the volume. What could be causing this??
