Mark Knopfler: Tracker

I've had this for awhile and it was instantly a favorite. Most likely just finished the final mod to my SDA 2B's unless I go TL and last night plopped this disc into the player. Damn, this is a good album...both music and sound quality wise! River Towns and Tall Cool Girl are 2 songs that I never get tired hearing, esp cranked.

I also have Shangri La, another good album of his. The Roadrunning one is OK but I prefer the other 2. What other works of his should I be looking for?
Yep, my name really is Bob.

I couldn't agree more, Tracker is an excellent album. I have it on Vinyl and it's a very good recording and pressing...typical Knopfler perfection.

One of my favorites is Mark performing one of JJ Cales songs "Someday" on the tribute album that Clapton put together, titled "The Breeze". Also an excellent job in the studio with some very good artists contributing, Knopfler, John Mayer, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Dan White and Clapton.

I'll look for that tribute album. I like Tracker so much I think vinyl of it will be a nice birthday gift to myself.

"Neck & Neck" with Chet Atkins is one of the lesser known albums from the early 1990s.

I don't think you'll be sorry on either count.

Hendricks was quoted in an interview when ask "How does it feel to be the best guitar player in the World?"

His reply was something like "I may be good, but nowhere near the Greatest Guitar Player of all time, Chet Atkins"

Neck & Neck is a gem.

I agree, Notting Hillbillies is a gem. Privateering is the album before Tracker and is a masterpiece. Golden Heart is his first solo album and is also excellent. If you have a SACD player then you must get a copy of Shangri-La on SACD, for a short time they were selling for about $6 for some reason, but you can still find them very cheap. I use it for my reference when testing speakers, tubes, etc. I've seen Mark Knopfler in concert many times and he is an absolute professional, if you google around you'll find the diaries to his concerts and recording sessions from his long-time keyboardist and co-producer. Mark has some totally rebuilt analog tape machines he uses in the studio and they discuss them in the diaries. He is one of my all-time favorite musicians.

I have sacd capability but not set up for mutli channel. Is the stereo sacd mix that much better than redbook?

I have only listened to it in stereo SACD. I believe the SQ to be excellent and much better than any of my Knopfler redbooks. I would recommend patiently looking around for a cheap price on the SACD, but first I would pick up a vinyl copy of Privateering and the other suggestions above that you don't currently have. I actually prefer Privateering over Tracker. BTW, sometimes Neck and Neck comes up very cheap. I picked up a cutout redbook for $1.
