Tora Tora Tora

Hello,

No I am not going off the deep end :)

When I got home yesterday my mother in-law was watching Pearl Harbor (2001). Not a great movie, Only reason I have it is Kate Beckinsale. So I stomach through it and was not impressed with either the audio (Dolby not even 5.1 on blu ray) or CGI used. I am glad I got it out of the $1.99 bin at Fry's.

After it was over I was putting it back and caught the glimpse of Tora Tora Tora from 1970. What the heck. I put it on, so much a better movie. Acting and effects from a 1970 movie blew away that 2001 P.O.S. Audio is DTS-HD Master.

Maybe I will watch Midway tonight.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Got Caught up on t-t-t on a random Saturday afternoon once, there went that day.

If you enjoy the genre and you've never seen tae guk gi, check it out. I tell anyone e I can about that movie, plus relatively fewer Korean War movies, so unique in that way too.

as I recall, the "effects" in Tora, Tora, Tora were largely real (for lack of a better word).

  • If you could blend parts from each movie it would be awesome. The Japanese prep part is something that is missing from Tora Tora Tora. Cut out the love story and add the bombing prep and raid of Doolittle crews.

What's funny is Michael Bay turned a more than $300 million profit on Pearl Harbor.

It was on one of the cable channels the other night and I could only stand ten minutes of it. That meant I missed out on the other two hours and fifty minutes of it.

PH, absolute crap, cept for Kate of course. TTT, was and is outstanding, and accurate from what I've read about it. TTT along with, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Saving Private Ryan are my favorite WWII Movies/Series.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is the movie to watch about the Doolittle Raid inaccurately portrayed in the Pearl Harbor movie. That was made in 1944 with no Alec Baldwin needed and plenty of genuine B25 footage.

I guess what I was trying to say is I had forgotten how good of a movie TTT is over that P,O,S, Michael Bay crap. I got TTT out of the Fry's bin for cheap as well as PH.

A bridge to far is another good WW2 flick, Has the "A" list actors who didn't make it on Midway. One of the two will be on my TV tonight.

Being the history buff that I am,I remember taking my girl on a date to see Tora Tora Tora when it was released back in '70...I found how they did that movie fascinating as well as how they stuck to the timeline of events...she not so much, even to the point of being ticked off as hell....My ultimate sentence??..Had to endure sitting through six showings of Love Story with her...needless to say,I never took her to see another historical film throughout our very long relationship...lesson learned...

Heh - one my first actual dates with the future Mrs. H was a screening of "Tess [of the D'urbervilles] at our college Friday night movie sequence. It was (or at least seemed like) six hours long, and it was all downer, all the time. It was a bad choice from both of our perspectives :) but still makes for a happy memory.

Can't recommend the movie, though -- although the titular actress was pretty hot. Had to look it up -- Nastassja Kinski was Tess.

sorry for the detour away from WWII (the big one) ;)

That is an awesome flick, The Duke should have won an award for that one.

Last night was Master and Commander, could not find my BD of Midway or Bridge to Far. errr in-laws or someone borrowed it and didn't return is... I normally make backups too but not of these two.

Don't hate me, I liked Pearl Harbor... Little cheesy but a serious HT workout. I use it for demo material all the time...
  • I'm sorry Ken, but I'm going to have to hate you. I refuse to watch Pearl Harbor. I made the mistake of watching Nicholas Cage in "The Wind Talkers" once and I've learned a lesson from that. :)

This scene was deleted from "We Were Soldiers" for some unknown reason. What a mistake !

Probably cut because although there have been men who have been awarded two Medals of Honor many years prior to the 1960s, that portrayal would have been pure fiction and there would have been a very negative reaction to it.

  • And it was a depiction of the story that the one soldier was telling to his buddies.
Sometimes military peoples are known to kind of enhance the truth.

It reminds me of a story I heard once. It seems that a group of Air Force peoples were at one of their weekly cotillions when they noticed that one of their fellows appeared to be upset.

"What's wrong, Timmy ?", he was asked.
""Oh, Billy, I just heard the most horrid thing !"
"How awful, what was it ?", inquired Billy.
"Someone just told me that we're actually considered to be ... in the military !"
Amidst the gasps and shouts of disbelief, one brave cotillion-goer stepped up, embraced Timmy with a gentle hug, and reassured him, "It's okay, Timmy, it's okay".

    ..... That's a true story ! I made it up heard it myself !

    B)o:)

"We Were Soldiers" was a great film.
