Is there anywhere one can download a single song in a lossless format without having to buy the whole album?

Yes, but if don't have the cd...it would be nice to buy one song.
Maybe I am blind but I don't see where I can do this in a lossless.

I don't see a website to download single lossless files.

Off the top of my head. One would be Edgar Winter's Frankenstein.

I don't think such a service exists. Full albums only unless you want lossy.

I wonder why you can't get a single in lossless. A wav file would be nice.

For the same reasons you can't buy a cd with single songs on them. Though at one time you could, but that burned out quick.

Maybe you know someone who bought the album or cd and can burn a single song for you, put it on a memory stick and you can download it. Send you a file of it ?

Wav files take up a lot of space, you use that format for everything ?

I will either buy or borrow the CD's and make copies. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
I never did the mp3 thing so when I started ripping last year I ripped to wav files. I wasn't too worried about space because storage is cheap (compared to the old days).
Does seem like everybody likes flac though.

The Edgar Winter album that Frankenstein was on is available in CD format new from Amazon for $4.99. That's usually the route I take for older music, or if I know I don't want the whole album look for the track on a compilation CD and buy that instead and get a bunch of good songs for $10 or so. Everything I listen to now is ripped from CD or downloaded and archived in WAV format.

    machone,
Here is a place for that one song download.

I am posting a link to an album Guitar Noir by Laurence Juber. He was guitarist for Wings. I purchased the entire album and it's great. One song is less than two bucks. Guitar Noir and Bennys Bounce are my two favorite on the album.

Image of page below. I downloaded flac and wav in 2.0 and 5.1. There is also a multiple song sampler download at aixrecords.com.

    Enjoy!

machone in case that didn't suit your fancy. I purchased one of these on ebay a few weeks ago after I saw it on the Cardas site. All of the WAV files on the card are 96/24. The files can be played directly from the card, or the tracks can be dragged onto your hard drive. It has nine tracks and great base for less than $7.

CARDAS AUDIO DEAN PEER "AIRBORNE" USB Card.

    From Cardas:
Dean Peer has been noted for decades as an electric bass virtuoso and authority on bass harmonics, and his new CD, Airborne, does not disappoint in its intricate and otherworldly harmonic melodies. This time, however, Peer introduces us to drummer Bret Mann, and gives us a peek into his musical roots – funk, jazz- rock, and Americana.

The Pono service is the only one I'm aware of that allows you to purchase individual tracks, Frankenstein happens to be on there for $2

They have a huge amount of music there now. I hadn't checked them out for a while. Seems like they have a lot of albums that are out of print on CD too.

Once purchased, are tracks or albums usable with other players or is Pono a closed system where they only work with the Pono player?

    Their prices are quite reasonable

This. HD Tracks is album only. I also noticed on Pono you can't buy an individual Neil Young song, but must buy the entire CD. :)

I have an account with HDtracks, and individual tracks can be purchased. I signed in and picked an album at random, and posted the user interface here:

Ditto "agreed". I've purchased quite a few albums on HDTracks of late, and most of what I want is available by album only.

I do see individual files on occasion, but mostly "deep tracks" that are available concurrent with "album only" availability for the more popular tracks, all on the same album.

The songs are yours to do with as you please, there's no DRM and they're in the standard FLAC format. I wish they had done a better job at marketing, because their player sounds fantastic and their music store is great. They also have a 'conversation' section with comments on each album, while not as good as a true reviews section it can serve the same purpose, certainly better than what the guys at HDTracks have, which is a big fat nothing. They also do free upgrades when a label releases a higher resolution version of al album, and have a button on each album for users to vote for upgrades letting the powers that be know where the demand is.

Does Pono mark a download as having been already purchased? Amazon does that for CDs and DVDs, and I find that vey helpful since I sometimes forget buying something. HD Tracks does not do that so I have to keep a list of titles I bought.
