RTi A9 Hookup Question

Looking for an informed opinion,

Ordered a pair of A9's last night on sale and looking forward to satisfying my upgrade itch finally. I'm using A7's with an A6 centre and A1's for my surrounds. Older Yamaha HTR6080 and an Emotiva XPA-5. Everything sounds nice to my ears at least. So I'm waiting for the A9's to arrive and I'm wondering if the 200 watts per channel is adequate for the A9's?

I've been toying with the thought of maybe using 4 amp channels for the A9's. Use a Y splitter from my receiver left and right pre outs into separate amp channels and powering the mids and highs separately. Use the 5th channel for my centre and let my receiver power my rear speakers. I know this isn't bi amping, but is there any real benefit to splitting the loads like this or not. Or is it best to just let my amp run each speaker the way I'm running things now?

Right, so you'll gain nothing by getting the A9's.

The A9's have a "better" midrange than the rest of the RTiA line. I think if you liked the sound of the a7's with the Emotiva than you'll be just fine with the a9's. 200watts should be enough, but if you're Avr will feed the rear surround preouts the l/r signal when in biamp mode then I would certainly try that method.

Try setting your speakers to large and see how you like the sound. You may get more out of those 7's you have now.

If you get the 9's, lower your crossover point some to allow the speakers to handle more of that mid bass.

FWIW, I run my A9's as Large, LFE Crossover set to 80hz.

If you have four channels of amplification you may find some benefit to quad-amping them. I've toyed around with it a bit but not enough to form conclusions yet, however they're getting 350 high current watts as is, so doubling that may not yield much more than more volume.

I did find a very slight improvement with bi-wiring, mostly with the tightness and definition of the bass.

  • Thanks for the advice. Actually double checked and realized I changed my crossover down to 60hz awhile back when I last redid my speaker levels. I also did have them set to large as well. I guess I'll wire everything up, do my set up and try a few different crossover settings to start with. Give it a few weeks and see how I like the sound and then decide. Sounds like it wont be much different and I've read that splitting the signal isn't the wisest way to do it anyway.
