I think I've decided that I want an equalizer. I'm not sure why, but I've sorta decided that I want to try to stick with all Yamaha components. Is this a really bad decision? I also would want a tape deck. Dual. Now, I'm not actually interested in buying right now, I was just wonderin' how many of 'em are floatin' around out there and if anybody would recomend I go with another brand or anything. I guess I mgiht should ask this in the 'Electronics' thread....

Thanks.

Why an EQ? They're tweeter-killers if not setup properly. I would re-think the EQ thing if I were you....

But, if you're insistant on it, Soundcraftsmen EQ's offer a level adjustment you don't find on most others that reduces the chances of overload. This would be the only EQ I would own.

Well, I'll tell ya why I want an EQ. And, you can tell me why it's absurd and why it won't work. When my friend was over this weekend, he brought his DCM KX-10 (I believe), and we had a comparo in regards to bass. The DCM's have 10" woofers. I went into the menu and changed the graphic EQ (a pain) and turned the treble down and the bass up on the front controls on my receiver. I still didn't get a 'lot' of bass. I mean, I guess it was plenty, but it was nothing amazing. My friend's dad has an old (old, old, old) Onkyo receiver. When we hooked up his DCMs to that receiver and turned up the bass, we could rattle everything in his house!!! and that wasn't even maxing out the bass settings. I don't know if this has more to do with the ability of the receiver or what, but I was thinking it would at least be easy to turn up the bass if I had a separate EQ.

Tell me what y'all think. I'm open to everything.

    Thanks!!

Receiver ? what flavor ? does it have preamp outs ? MAYBE you should be thinking amp instead of equalizer.

haha; I'm also thinking of a max of maybe $150!! lol

Though, it may be an amp that I need. I thought the RX-V1400 was a decent amp, though....

If you do end up gettting an EQ, skip right past the consumer level garbage and get a pro audio unit. Check out dbx, they make some great stuff.

Sure, an external EQ will allow you to pump up the bass, but is this the effect you want? It's not a realistic level of bass, and not true to the original mix. You have a nice system, an outboard EQ for the purposes you describe would be 2 steps back, in my opinion. BUT, it's your dollars and your system; look for a used Soundcraftsmen.

Thanks, steveinaz; I appreciate your advice even though you don't agree with my mission. :D I just kinda like turnin' it up every now and then. Couldn't I still run it straight even if I had an EQ?

Now, what about dual deck tape players/recorders? Specifically Yamaha units? Anybody know about 'em? If they're still around? What are some better brands I might should look into?

    Thanks!!!

Wow!! A nice system?!?! Man, compliments like that'll change my mind all the time, lol. Maybe I don't need an EQ.

Now, you did say 'for the purposes you describe'; for what purposes do you feel the use of an EQ would be legitimate?

    Thanks!!

Personally, I wouldn't go with a 2/3 octave EQ, there's too much overlap. Check out the dbx 231:

EQ's are legitimately used when set-up with a pink noise generator and professional mic, for the purpose of flattening in-room response. Your purpose, as I understand it, is to have a more flexible tone control.

As far as dual-cassette decks, I don't have clue brotha...been too long for me. I haven't had a cassette deck since 1985.

    Why such antiquated technology?
And I think you would be better off with two single decks, you may want to adjust the recording level on some low level source, you can't do that with a dubber.

Are you sure you can't adjust the recording level? I though you could.

I have a good number of tapes and Dad has a bunch, and I'd like to be able to play them on my system. I also might try putting them on my computer and possibly making CDs. I dunno.

    Thanks!

And, flexible tone control is exaclty what I was lookin' fer.:D

Very good point that I second. I use one only for this; in fact my mains are so flat they don't need one when measured at three feet-it's the room that screws everything up.

That Onkyo probably has much more juice coming out of it than your Yammie, that's why there was more bass coming out of the speakers. Like PolkWannabie said, external amplifier is what you need.

I suspect the Onkyo was running a "loudness" circuit as well.

It's a tough call, sometimes what sounds good isn't really true to the original. Most people have what I call a "bass sweet tooth." And like the sound of (lets call it) reinforced bass. Hey, to each his own; it's your money, your system, and should be setup the way you like it.

I think I'm impressed. Well, I by no means have enough dough for an amp. Besides that, Mom would absolutely KILL me if I laid eyes on another piece of audio equipment in the next 2 years after I got these Klipsch speakers...

And, I'd say I have that, uhh, bass sweet tooth, lol; I'm not one of those ridin' down the road with a one-note sub rattling the world, but I do like a lot of accurate bass.

    Thanks.

Yahama I know little of, but the stuff you want to do, I would go only one way.

The Pioneer CT-W606DR. Its reasonably priced (around 175. new) and sounds great.

It will make those old dolby B cassette sparkle. It has a digital processing system with a 20bit a/d to /da converter that works like nothing I've ever heard.

The s/n ratio is something over 90db's and the music comes out of complete silents even at ear slamming volumes. I have copied many cassette to cd and they simply sound wonderful. Always better than the original tape for sure.

Dual deck, black face and I will never give her up. With over 2000 cassette...I have good reason.

yeah, if you're gonna have an eq, you gotta go for the ring.

it's worth mentioning though, you can use an eq to muscle a flat response but if you need wild gain swings to get it done there's a good chance the room and gear are being pressed into one type of distortion or another. humbly, i think, like bass eq,.. good gear, placement and treatments first, then tap it with the eq hammer as lightly as possible.

it's been 20 years since i've paid attention to equalizers and frequency analyzers (around when keying command prompts were all the rage), so i don't know what's available today, but, i'd look for:

digital, for memory options for different curves (ie near, far, loud, soft, music, movies) and, for me, it would just be easier to work with number values than a slides or knobs.

if not, more detents than just the 0 gain position or ability to easily read precise positions on the scale.

controls with a physically long throw from minimum to maximum gain (maybe 3 to 4 inches).

    )

I think most EQ's have bypass switches on em.. so you could bypass it easily if you wanted to.

I don't think an EQ is a good idea either in most systems. I haven't used an EQ since the early 80's if I remember right. Good equipment ususally won't need any EQ's.

Curious here to why you want a dual deck cassette player. Those can usually be found all the time in pawn shops and thrift stores.. check Ebay for well built vintage ones. Do they even make new dual cassette decks anymore? :p

Marly, I'll look into that Pioneer tape deck; do they still make it?

Dangerous, I just have a few cassettes I don't wanna give up

I think I may look into an EQ just for playin' around with. First, though, I may want an A/V rack so my stuff doesn't get so dusty. Seems to me to be a bad thing when you look into the top of your receiver and see dust.

    Thanks!!

I've got a cheap Realistic EQ that I could let you have for about $18 shipped. It's a seven band 1/3rd octave that works great. I've since gotten a couple of better equalizers and don't really use this one anymore. It's pretty small and only has one tape monitor, but it's quiet as a church mouse and I was happy with it for years.

Soundsw great, Gidrah. What would the frequency range be that I could adjust? Only one tape monitor? What in the world is that? And, how would I hook it up? Where in my system would it be? What cables would it use?

    I'm clueless here......
