Getting old

Arguably, the most precious thing in life is time.

33 is getting old. I always joke about how I'm getting old but today is the first time it really hit me.

Time flies and things just happen so fast. A year goes by, weeks just fly, and the days seem to steamroll right through.

Even a decade just seems to come and go. I've been with my wife since high school and I've known her for half my life already. My kid just turned 1 and by the time she drives I'll be 48.... Sigh.

It's like that shield of invincibility that we all know so well back during our college days just wears off someday and you try to hang on to what's left of it but you know you can't, the armor fades and you inevitably age.

I'm not posting this because it is my birthday. I am posting this because I wish I could just slow time down (or atleast the perception of it).

Just a vent. Thanks for listening fellas.

    @Joey_V - If you think time is going by fast now, wait until your kid starts school;
kindergarten will morph into 8th grade in the blink of an eye.

I am not saying this to be melancholic or to be a downer, but rather to ask you to spend every minute you possibly can doing what you enjoy. And if that enjoyment can be spent doing things with your kid(s), so much the better. We are all allotted the same 24 hours each day to spend as we please, so be one of the fortunate ones who gets the most out of each day.

    Oh, and Happy Birthday too.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I turned 33 in February and that was the first birthday where I felt "old." It was weird...32 still seemed young...33 seemed old

    Oh well :)

Lol.......33 and your feeling old ? Man, i was rollin' at 33. You have one thing right.....time flys by. Close your eyes for a second and a decade whizes by. Why do you think older people like to slow it down a few notches ? Because the time you have left above ground is limited, why hurry it along. God, I remember those days. What....it's Christmas time again ? Didn't it just end like 3 Months ago ? Lol.

    Happy Birthday!

But hey, 33 AIN'T old. You're almost a college student from my PERSPECTIVE! When I was your age I was in the best shape of my life. I felt immortal, not ONCE did the idea of age enter my mind. And I was conducting research and teaching in China. What a great time that was. Young, strong, fast, THIN-I didn't look a day over 25! Those were the days! You should BE REVELING in YOUR YOUTH!

And get back to us on the "old" stuff when you pass 50 or so. And, you know what? We'll still think you're YOUNG! lol

It's all RELATIVE, I'm afraid! My daughter's off to college and I am certainly NOT 48 anymore! Haven't been there in a while?

Maybe...just maybe...your 33 and looking 20 years out and all you see is you working your b u t t off and every day seems like Groundhog day.

Yeah, that's about right, get used to it. Only....never be soo busy as to not take notice of life and the treasures it offers along the way. Don't forget to live a life, instead of just working one.

Easier said than done, I know, but trust me....leave yourself with no regrets. Life is a balancing act between the things we have to do, and want to do. Sometimes it swings heavier to one side or the other, for years....but that's just the nature of the beast.

Happy Birthday anyway. When you past an old f a r t on the street and they look at you and smile.....they are thinking, " Wooo.....that suckers in for it, glad I'm retired. " :)

Happy Birthday Joey! I know what your going through. I'll be 34 in September and sometimes I feel like I'm losing my youth, but I figure as long as I stay active and act really immature I can squeeze in a few more years before I feel old. I have found doing stupid sh it makes me feel young.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. Happy birthday, Joey_V!

Don't waste your time feeling old. Just make sure you take advantage of every minute you get.

I don't know whether you've yet had a real life-threatening event. If you have, you know why I mention this in this context.

If you have not, then, when you have your first one (and I hope you survive it), you'll learn how precious time is.

As my mother always said: "Death is a part of life."

She didn't say, "And death is what makes life so valuable." But it is. Anything that is available without limit has no value. Time is no exception.

    Carpe diem!

PS: Like ken brydson, I've got shoes older than 30 years. In fact, on Wednesday last, I wore a pair of Alden cordovan leather bluchers that I purchased in the winter of 1979. They look almost new because I have taken good care of them for over 36 years.

There's a lesson in that: Take care of yourself!
