I've been looking into putting together a NAS to use as a media server but I'm not sure what configuration to go with. I'd like to be able to rip hi-res CDs and Blu-ray movies and be able to access them over my home network.
Not sure how much an ideal system would be, but would a $500 budget be a good start? I'd like to be able to have the ability to upgrade the server with USB-connected external drives when needed.
So, where to start?

Zltful, take your time. No rush here and I'm sure you're busy as everybody else is with the holidays and such.
My son said he was going to donate one of his PCs to the cause of a network media server. The computer has 3.5T of storage but I'll probably upgrade the capacity since we'll be sharing it. He's a tech at a computer repair shop so he's pretty current with what's out there, although I would guess that the realm of audio/video servers is a bit specialized. We will just have to research what kind of blu-ray drive and software to purchase and we should be good to go, and for a very small price tag.TV: 65" Samsung QLED 4K
