CD/Blu-ray ripper/server. Where to begin?

I've been looking into putting together a NAS to use as a media server but I'm not sure what configuration to go with. I'd like to be able to rip hi-res CDs and Blu-ray movies and be able to access them over my home network.

Not sure how much an ideal system would be, but would a $500 budget be a good start? I'd like to be able to have the ability to upgrade the server with USB-connected external drives when needed.

So, where to start?

Whoa boy...this is a can of worms to be sure. Hehe.

I will write something up about my own experiences this afternoon and you can go from there.

But the TLDR version is simple...if you don't want to run into the shortcomings of the more common home NAS solutions, go with a small scale home server instead. Those NAS devices simply lack the processing power to perform well in a multitasking environment and most of them can't handle encoding duties due to very low power processors being used.
(My experiences are with Synology Disk Station devices)

Zltful, take your time. No rush here and I'm sure you're busy as everybody else is with the holidays and such.

My son said he was going to donate one of his PCs to the cause of a network media server. The computer has 3.5T of storage but I'll probably upgrade the capacity since we'll be sharing it. He's a tech at a computer repair shop so he's pretty current with what's out there, although I would guess that the realm of audio/video servers is a bit specialized. We will just have to research what kind of blu-ray drive and software to purchase and we should be good to go, and for a very small price tag.

That's where I was going to go with this.

I ended up building a media server (there is a thread in the Digital section) which will have a TON more capabilities than the stand alone home NAS devices.
