I'm thinking about selling out

I am just tired of all the wires and crap behind my entertainment center and would love to tidy it all up with less gear drawing less power taking up less room and lastly requiring less repairing.

    What would you do?

I went through this same thing several months ago. The plan was to "simplify" my system. Buy an SC-05, sell the amp, and live happily ever after. Great plan in theory, but in reality...

My system sounded good on just the SC-05. The problem came when my amp didn't sell. I've got an amp sitting here unused so I decide that I'll just hook it up until it sells. Nope. Though the difference in SQ wasn't night and day, it was significant enough that I decided I wasn't going to sell my amp.

That being said, the SC you're looking at is obviously better than my 05 so...

Maybe the new Elite SC unit will work for you...but given where your current system is, only trying one out will you really know.

Like others, I say do what you are already doing and go used. Find a more capable AVR as a Pre/Pro and a single 5-7 Channel amp. As far as wires...get some wire organizers, do it right once, then don't look back there again. :)

    Onkyo TX-NR3009 - $625
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/121383929524

    Sunfire TGA-7400 - $599 and up
    http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/4532588967.html
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sunfire-TGA-7400-7-Channel-Amplifier-400w-to-800w-Theater-Grand-Amplifier-Amp-/221486987816?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item3391a73a28

Now you are talking 400-800 watts x 7, 9.2 Capability, 7 Rear, 1 Front HDMI inputs, 2 HDMI outputs, 4K scaling, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 w/ Dynamic EQ & Dynamic Volume.

I think that Onkyo should make a nice Preamp. IMO, the TX-NR3008 I picked up sounds better to me than the SR806 I had and for some reason even better than the three Elite SC-05, 25, 65 units I had in some ways. Maybe I need my head checked? or need to hear them side by side? But I swear the unit sounds better in Pure Direct listening to music. The remote and Audyssey mic recently showed up...so I plan to run XT32 this weekend....a first for me so I will see what it does.

Anyway, having worked inside the SR806 and the TX-NR3008, the latter is more robust internally. Maybe not what you are looking for in downsizing...but the unit is big and heavy.
    Onkyo_TX-NR3009_InnenlebenGesamt.jpg
Also, so far it seems the 3009 units are less prone to the HDMI issues of the 3008, 3007 unit. I had to reflow the DSP chip on my unit...the reason I got it for so cheap.

I will cede to you good sir, but promise me you WILL pull the trigger on this one without having to sell something first. Buy now and sell later.

I fear this one is on Ebay as well, and it will go well beyond the price it sits at now, perhaps up to 1600 before it's over, so seal the deal on the CL ad and hope he does not want to let the auction ride out...

Great price on the Onkyo, there. I must say that although that Onkyo has newer HDMI tech in it and is a higher number and newer model. The essential structure of the transformer, caps, heat sink, fans, etc. Is an almost exact copy of my TX-SR 805. Which is one reason I still have it. The 805 was a spectacular bargain for its time, weight, amps and power. Can still hang with the upper level Onkyos power-wise, no problem!

TOTL Onkyos are nothing to sneeze at. I'd put them right up there with the Pioneer in terms of power and features. Good HT sound too. The Pio amps might be a little better for "music" though?

The CL seller told me the unit sold. I doubt it as I think it's the unit on eBay and he realized he's gonna get a lot more than he listed it on CL for.

Yep, the legend, the 805 is a brute. These older upper units are all big heavy and run HOT! The 806, and the Elite SC units I could put on the A/V rack...not the case with the 3008. It will be on a black granite slab right in front to allow it to get some air. Something to consider as that 3009 or one of their Preamps is larger and twice as heavy as the DTR-5.9. May or may not be what he is after...

...and yep, that is probably the same one on ebay. Too bad...but I bet it sells for less than $1K. Did you see the one listed in Chi town for $1500? http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/ele/4554856957.html

Yeah, I am just not sure how much I am feeling Onkyo... Integra's got a 3 year warranty, and after 3 HDMI boards on this current unit, I'd have been screwed with the Onkyo as it woulda been way past its warranty after the second board....

I am honestly thinking Anthem or even a Pio as a pre, in which case I would likely step down to something like the 81 or 83 to save a couple bucks to spend on a better amp.

I bet it goes close to 2k... those things are RARE and REALLY REALLY good.

The one in chi town is outside what I can spend right now or I would be on that.

I may just have to pony up and get a dealer special somewhere on one of the sunfire units, like a 7201 as the 7501 would break the bank..

    Yes it appears I am.

However if nothing else if I can consolidate into either a good 5 channel or 7 channel amp, I can at least eliminate a piece of equipment and a powercord from the mix.

I may just go 180 entirely and look at buying a pre-amp only like a Marantz unit with Audyssey XT or XT 32 (if I can afford that) and then look for a really nice amp...

    But we will see......
