Epicure Model 1

Recently met a guy locally that is my age and finds all sorts of random speakers for cheap. He of course flips them but gives me what I consider a good deal still.
I got some Klipsch Quartets for $200 the other week, a little higher but still a deal for me. He's offered me some KG 3.5s for $100, some SM112s for $130, and last night a pair of Epicure Model 1s. He didn't put a price on them yet, but he did tell me they need a lot of work. What would a rough pair with maybe 3-4 refoams and a refinish be worthwhile? I don't plan on flipping them for a profit, if anything sell them for what I have in them years down the line. It will be my first full refurb, so a learning experience as well.

I get pictures of them tonight, and I'll post them in here. I have no idea what they're worth as I've never dealt with Epicure speakers. They do look fairly cool though.

Tough to say what they are worth, maybe $75 or less...probably $50. It'll take a pro to refinish those cabinets as the veneer is very nice but very thin. The drivers will no doubt need re-foaming and those kits are readily available on the auction site. If the tweeters are shot, that could get expensive, but humanspeakers.com should be some help there. If the crossovers need work (they will), then you can add a few more dollars for that. Probably need fresh grill cloth and that is a dark brown, not a black. Pretty soon, you'll have a couple hundred into them.

Once upon a time, and maybe once again, those were nice speakers. If you are interested in passing them on, let me know, I am up for the challenge and have the time..

Big fan of some of the early EPI speakers but they have very little value 50
00 if tjey need nothing done to them if they need work pass for free. The klipsch 3,5's ( i have. Had a couple pair in the past and would not pay over 100.00 for a mint pair. Have bought and sold for 25/50 for nice pairs
bit if you like them it up to you.

We are talking about these right? I would think they be worth more than $50-$75 for sure. That is a pretty rare model I think. Or at least one that does not come up for sale very often. Maybe I am wrong.....

I dont reconize "a model 1", there was a mt1, monitor 1 and monitor 1 te, but i dont reconize these pictured either. They look cool enough, and i'll agree they would be worth more just in the cool factor alone but most not. However i WOULD kill for some model 3.0 towers ( had a pyramid shape ). The early ones ( before Harmon international bought them ) were great sounding just build quality was cheep
the drivers and xovers ( Boroughs design) had a very good sound, especially for the price. I still have a box full of parts and xovets from many restoration projects i did years ago.i had at least a dozen pair over the years. Great bang for the buck just not critical listening quility.imho.

I remember seeing a pair of those at the main Macys store in NYC when they still had an A/V department. Never heard them though.

Does anyone know if this is still in the OK period of Epicure or the decline period? As I remember it; EPI (related to Epicure) goes south in the late '80s. If you have pre late '80s EPIs you're golden. If they're late '80s or later you probably have some S##ty horns, etc. in your speakers and not the air spring or inverted dome burhoe tweeter?

EPI, of course, was an acronym - Epicure Products Inc. of Newburyport, MA (originally).
In the 1970s, the Epicure brand name was reserved for their top-quality stuff.
The entry-level Epicure was the "10" - essentially the same, I expect, as the EPI 100.

Looks like the Epicure 1 was a bit later - indeed, the one pictured in an earlier post to this thread.

AR went south in the 80's, and I'd give a nut for a pair of 1985 vintage MGC-1's.

Those Epicure look like some thought went into them.

That's pretty cool. I'm about to order the refoam kit for the Model 1's. I had to de-odorize them as they had the smell of funk from the previous owner.

  • Hi new here.i just bought a pair of these for 50.00. All the speakers need refoaming. They didnt come with the eq. They have the top covers and there in good shape. They have the bottom covers but the wood is broke on both of them. Are they worth fixing. I was going to use them for my fronts for surround set up. Thanks
