How do surround stands work?

How exactly do surround sound stands work? Here are a few pictures of some that are for sale on my local CL and it looks like you are suppose to set the speaker on a little 1" wide platform? What is suppose to keep them from falling off?

So there are stands that have a very small table like top to them? That makes more sense.
