How do surround stands work?

How exactly do surround sound stands work? Here are a few pictures of some that are for sale on my local CL and it looks like you are suppose to set the speaker on a little 1" wide platform? What is suppose to keep them from falling off?

    Those stands are for mini satellite speakers.

    So there are stands that have a very small table like top to them? That makes more sense.

    For basic surround stands you can go with something like Sanus NF series or you can build your own. Super easy if you have the time to do it.
