I received a pair of the so-called “refurbs” today and believe I know why they are being sold at near cost.

I think they are QC rejects because the side plates are not a perfect fit (snug) with the piano black veneer. Sonically they sound great and now I have LSi speakers all the way around my home theater.

That problem has been noted in previous threads of the ones sold at full price as well. Or are these really nasty?

Not really nasty, but you can see it. The fit is not as tight as my 9s.

I could be wrong cause the price tag under the $199 was $599. ;)

There is no gaping spaces at least that I've seen, but the topmost edge of the wood is not directly against the cabinet. I can't say that I've ever looked that closely to them in the stores to see the difference, but had GG not mentioned it, I wouldn't have ever thought anything about it. The fit of the sidepanels is uniform around though, so I don't know if that's the overall issue or not.

Several of the pair I have do indeed have the $699 (Fry's reg. retail) under them, so I don't really believe that these units are refurbished in any way. The s/n's are normal tags, so who knows.

I've opened 3 pair now to inspect and connect to make sure they're playing fine and all are good. For $200, no complaints will be had........lol

Well damn boy, send them on! :D

I'm sure they're fine. Even if they're not perfect specimens, can't beat 1/3 their original cost.

I think these will be great for HT. I even turned down an offer last night for the dvd player I had up for sale! I'll give this HT stuff another whirl.

Got my pair earlier today. Hooked them up a little bit ago here at home and gave them some serious Carver m1.5t juice! WOW, they are impressive little speakers! I'm planning to eventually send these to the mains for my surround setup and promoting my SDA's to 2 channel only.

Brett, you are DA MAN! Thanks so much! Going to send an email to you in a little while, so check for it later this evening.

I gotta say this though, Brett went out of his way for basically a group of guys he never met in his life and shipped them without us even having sent payment. That says a helluva bunch about Brett! I am taking care of him with some extra $$$, thats for sure!

To the others on the forum that always look out for other forum members, good job guys! Makes me feel very comfortable knowing I have people out there around the country that I can rely on and trust.

I agree! I've dealt with him before and he followed through with the deal even though it turned out not to be the best deal for him. (He underestimated shipping but followed through with the deal anyway)! That shows a lot of character in my opinion. I took the deal and reaped the benifits anyway, heh heh. Hopefully I made up for it this time. :D

I got my pair a few minutes ago. Had to chase the FedEx guy halfway across town-- but I got 'em. The box looked a little rough, but the speakers are fine. It's good to see that they're using styrofoam inserts again. I think they hold up a lot better than the cardboard, especially with heavy items like these chunky little speakers.

I'm at work now, so I only had a few minutes to run home and test them out. They don't like the Denon 3801-- or I guess I should say it doesn't like them. No surprise there, really. I fear that a lot of people that buy LSi's end up being disappointed because they don't feed them enough current. That's the best argument for keeping them out of the mass-market retail stores, IMO.

Once I hooked them to the Carver TFM 4.0 they sounded pretty impressive, right out of the box. My wife said "The subwoofer's on, isn't it?" It wasn't. These things rival, possibly even equal the RT800i's in bass output, which astonishes me for the size of the box. It's nice tight bass, too, not quite as deep maybe, but very satisfying. They're a little more laid-back and smoother on the top end, too. Made even the Smash Mouth song my son wanted to hear pretty listenable, at a fairly loud level! Their placement was far from optimum, as I had them sitting on top of the 800i's, which are too far apart and not placed that well to begin with.

The ebony finish isn't really my cup of tea, but for the price....
It's not like I bought them to look at.

I'll play with them some more when I get home this afternoon.

    Thanks again, Brett!

    Jason

EDIT: I got to listen to these some more a little while ago. Actually I was able to hook the 800's back up, on the same equipment, to try and get a feel for the sonic differences between the two. I might need to tone-down my comment above regarding the bass output: The 800's have more, but the 7's are very respectable in that department, as well. After all, the 800's have, what? four times the cone area and enclosure volume?

I find the 7's to be very detailed yet smooth-sounding, when compared to the 800's and 55i's I'm used to listening to. I never really expected to own a pair of these, new, because I figured that they were priced beyond what I'd be willing to spend on them. I'm very glad to have a pair.

As some of you know, I like to build speakers in my spare time ( as if I have any of that lately). I've been using one of my RT3's as kind of a "reference" small bookshelf. All speakers sound different, obviously, but when I work on one of similar size, I compare it to the RT3 to try and identify things that it's doing wrong and/or right. These LSi7's may become my new reference.

How many hours of play is considered the break in point for these?

The lsi15's took a long time. I listened to one CD and it was the same as all the previous ones. Then I put in another and thought "holy **** that CD sounds great". Then I noticed all the other ones sounded great as well. Really strange. The sound just totally detached itself from the speaker. It became big and real. I hope I'm listening when that happens to these!

Yeah, I'm liking these! It seems odd to me that it would be a night-and-day, all-of-a-sudden type change when they break-in. Not saying that it's not that way-- just that it seems odd.

All speakers, being electro-mechanical devices, obviously have a break-in period. Speaking from experience with raw woofers, break-in usually results in a measurable change: Fs drops, Vas goes up, Qts goes down. All the results of the suspension loosening up. The same thing usually happens with tweeters, but to a lesser degree since they don't experience much excursion. Sometimes with tweeters, it takes a little use for the ferrofluid in the gap to get distributed evenly. But these ring radiators don't use ferrofluid, IIRC.

I've been wanting to hook these 7's up and run an impedance curve on them, just to see how low they go. I wonder if I do one now, then do it again later on, if it would be possible to see the effects of break-in? Might be worth a shot....

    Perhaps I'm overly analytical?
