Easy one for Pioneer AVR users

Hi!
Just bought my first HDMI avr! With my old one (no hdmi), I used to listened to music while watching tv. That was not a problem with the hdmi from the cable box sent directly to the tv. Now, with my SC-1227-K (canadian model), I have the hdmi from the cable box sent to the avr. Is it possible to get the video source from the cable box while listening to audio source of another input? How can I do that?

Kind of... You can't do it through your main system though, I had posted a thread about this earlier and I know I can't do it with an SC-25. However, I believe you have a powered zone 2 out. If you do, pick up a small pair of cheep speakers at GW or Craigslist, and set them somewhere so you can't see them, then you can run your zone 1 (Lets say, PS3 or xbox) and mute that volume, then run zone 2 off another input (CD player, tuner, music streamer). Thats the only idea I can think of, I used to be able to run a video input and seperate audio input off of a older Sony AVR and loved that ability. Good luck!

What I did was use the analog output in my cable box and hooked it up to a second input of my TV. That way I could use the HMDI to AVR when I wanted both sound and video thru my avr or switch to the second input when I wanted the video and/or sound with music playing from my AVR.

That is very sad not to be able to use video and audio from 2 different sources at the same time, through the avr.
Is it specific to Pioneer or is it a general hdmi thing?

General. Because both audio and video are going through the AVR, whereas before you just happened to have the tv on and the receiver set to the CD input or whatever. I used to do this as well when I was working at night. Turn on a game and music and just glance at the game every now and then. I don't think that there really is a solution accept perhaps cody's. Umm.. I think I understand what you're getting at..
With both my Onkyo's (808 and 1010) I can select on the fly what audio source I want on a given input. My cable box is hooked up via HDMI. I can then hit my setting button on the remote to bring up an on-screen menu. Form there go into the audio sub menu and say listen to either HDMI, Coax, Optical or Analog.
Another way is to assign the Cable HDMI input to the TV input as well but tell the TV input to listen to the analog audio input. That way I can see the TV but listen to a CD (or whatnot). Then just hit the cable button on the remote to restore audio for the TV.
Does this make any sense? I haven't had enough coffee.. -
That sounds right...its just a lot of extra steps. With no hdmi in the mix I could make a custom macro on my Harmony remote to turn on the tv to a game with a cd playing. One button (well a couple more to change the channel and push play on the cd). Looking at the manual for his AVR here is something for the OP to try..
The HDMI inputs, analog, coax and optical are assignable.
Hook the cable box into HDMI 2-SAT/CBL
Take the L-R analog outs from his CD Player and hook them into IN-1 (CD).
Go to Page 39 in your manual. I?m not sure how the menu is setup on the Pioneer. The idea is to assign HDMI IN 2 to another input, along with it still being assigned to its default of for SAT/CBL. Then in the Audio input, select Analog 1.
This is the way I have it setup on my Onkyo. The HDMI connection for Comcast is assigned to its default input in addition to TV/CD input as well. From there the analog L-R for the TV/CD input is assigned for audio instead of audio over HDMI.
When I hit the TV/CD input, I have Comcast on the TV but the analog L-R from my Oppo as the audio source.
Hopefully the OP is able to do the same. -

Does your cable box have an optical or digital out? Run the HDMI from the box to the TV for video and audio, and run a dig coax or optical cable to your AVR. There really is not benefit of running HDMI from cable box straight into AVR. As far as I know, nothing broadcasts in DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. -

Yes, that is definitively a possibility but have to go through the menu each time I want to switch, which is not quite convenient. I decided to pass the hdmi out from the cable box directly into the tv (like I use to do with my old non-hdmi avr). This way I can listen to my music while watching tv and switch audio source quickly.
Just discovered airplay! What a coooool feature!
Also, there is a very nice app that allows me to control entirely the receiver with my Iphone.
Nice sounding avr with rti10.
