Hey there, I currently own basic computer speakers that run through the green 3.5mm plug and they def need to be replaced with something that can handle music with low freq. I was looking at the Polk PSW10 and the 35B Monitors but would I need to buy a receiver or can I just get adapters? On the back of my computer I only have 6 analog(orange.blue.green pink), and S/PIDF IN/OUT. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

So you've got a PC and some PC speakers. What size is your room, what overall goal are you trying to achieve and what kind of budget are you working with? -
Also, it this is just for your computer, you might consider adding a small receiver to get some power going to those monitors.

My room is about 10' X 15'. And yes these will only be used as my computer speakers for music. I listen to techno so responsive and clear bass is necessary. Budget is $200 for speakers/sub. Newegg is selling the PSW10 for $80 and the M30 for $80 as well. I don't really want a receiver as those are expensive. And thank you for your reply

Sounds like a good plan! Yeah, the sub has it's own amp, so if your computer can drive those monitors, you're set.
I've owned the Monitor 30 series II which is basically the same, great speaker. -
How do I know if my computer can drive the M30s? I have no idea how these would be connected to my computer at all. Would it go from the speakers to the sub via 5way bindng then from the sub to the computer with RCA to 3.5mm?

You'll need a receiver or amp to drive speakers unless they are self powered.

Maybe check around on Craigslist, not gonna find that in a store though. With a budget in that range I'd recommend looking at a good set of powered speakers instead. Check out audio engine and swan speakers.

I was trying to spend a maximum of $200 on the whole setup. So if M30s and PSW10 are $160 total then that doesnt leave me with much

Those powered speakers dont drop low enough in freq for me to not get the subwoofer

As the folks recommended above, you will want a AV receiver to power the speakers. You could find an older receiver fairly cheap. Ideally the receiver will have spdif or toslink (optical) inputs, if your PC has outputs for them, otherwise you could could connect your pc by using 3.5mm to RCA adapters (not preferred). Outdated AV receivers tend to devalue quickly once they become outdated (no HDMI). If you still cant find a receiver cheap enough you could try to find a used psw10 to fit the budget.
With a quick search of my local craigslist I was able to find:
Marantz SR4400 AV receiver - $75
Harmon Kardon Receiver/AMP (AVR 310) - $75
Yes, they are a bit out of your price range, but you may be able to find something that fits with a bit of searching or saving. -

But I dont need a home theater receiver. I will only be using 1% of its capabilities. So theres no cheaper alternative huh?

I don't think you will find anything cheaper than an AVR, maybe with the exception of a stereo receiver.

The above might work for you. It's what I use in my computer rig and it actually sounds pretty darn good in a modest nearfield rig. It would be slightly over budget but about as close as you'll get. The key is that the psw10 needs a high pass filter for the setup to really work which I am not sure that is. It'll work without it but not as well.

Yeah, I'm afraid it's not quite as easy as you were hoping BUT.......on the plus side, if you did go with a small AVR and your PC has a bluray player, you're set up for both music and movies with a very nice audio section. Even it's only DVD, you're still good to go.

I used these for my bedroom setup for some time, and its a rockin (though not very refined) little setup. The sub puts out more bass than the PSW10 will, allow the sats will not sound as refined as the polks. The only reason I got rid of it at the time was that it had no remote, so I had to get up to adjust the volume. I was going to suggest those klipsch as well. Check out edifier too they are gaining popularity and sound pretty good too.
