preamp recommendations for a newbie?

Due to input limitations on my current unit I am looking for a stereo preamp. I would prefer a unit with a good tuner section and remote volume.

I have seen a number of second hand units that look like they could fit the bill without breaking the bank but find myself so far out of date that I could not tell a good one from bad. I have no problems buying second hand from reputable sources.

Any suggestions?

    I guess I could have been a bit more specific about what I thought I needed.

    The stereo is to be in my office/man cave. Right now I am using a Yamaha CA-1000 integrated amplifier with a Yamaha CT-800 tuner. Polk SDA-2A's undergoing a slow update and upgrade. I have a 75 wpc tube amp in the works just because it seemed cheap on the front end. I listen to broadcast radio more than anything else. Man night for poker (I am the only one not married or otherwise attached) starts out scrolling favorite stations and if nothing is decent then move to the multi disk player.

    I can decouple the Yamaha and use the preamp only but still have the size issue. (double height with the tuner) If I use my Velleman passive preamp then I am limited to two inputs and the green matches nothing.

    I had a bad experience with a Adcom GFP-1 but read good thing about units such as the CTP-400

    You are not wrong but that does not help with my "make it smaller" thought.

    well it is small in all three dimensions (mass, too) compared to a CA-1000... funny form factor though.

    Howzabout a vintage Yamaha C-4 preamp?

    Small,remote and a decent tuner ? Carver CT-6 might work for you.

    How does the Carver compare to other units of this type such as the offerings from Adcom?

    Reading user reviews has not been as helpful as I had hoped.
