While Susan was at the movies with the grandkids I thought I would Dynamat the transformer cover and cabinet of my Wright amp.

.

I had never had the nickel plated cover off and WOW those trannys are huge. Now when I thump the cabinet or tranny cover it goes thud instead of ringing. Warming up the fire bottles to see if I can hear a difference.

I agree! Very nice, they look like the ones on my old Pilot Sa-232, were they vintage sourced?

Supposedly George Wright used magnaquest transformers but when contacted mq he said George also sourced local nw pacific people to. Amp was made in 2003.

Be careful in placement of Dynamat in areas that get hot from the tube rectifiers and the like. Dynamat will melt and turn to a semi-liquid goop and become very uncool.

For anyone else thinking of doing this, make sure you run your amp for a good day and maybe do a solid couple hours of heavy listening to determine and ensure where your hot spots are prior to application of anything like this. This is not an easy thing to remove after the fact.

Agree Doro, thanks for pointing that out. I checked my gear before hand. Here are the specs if anyone else plans to do this.

    Description:
Dynamat Xtreme is a patented, lightweight elastomeric butyl and aluminum constrained-layer vibrational damper. Dynamat Xtreme conforms and fuses easily to sheet metal and other hard substrates. Material performance is optimized for temperature ranges between 14?F and 140?F (- 10?C to +60?C). Material can withstand temperature extremes between -65?F and +300?F (-54?C to +149?C) and is highly resistant to aging.

It's not just that. Those covers are metal for a good reason - the transformers need to dissipate heat. Your dynamat is a great thermal insulator, so those transformers' life is going to be much shorter insulated like that.

Never thought about that way, I think I will just take the cover off and let the trannys breath.

Any issue doing that? Or is the cover there for more than looks?

Yup - heavy amps. I have a Proceed AMP5 for my HT and when I am ready to retire and move, I will probably not be able to lift it. It weights 120 lbs. Then again, I will not be moving anything except my 2CH and some of HT gear.

Cover is most likely there to meet UL safety requirements or could be just for looks. If you believe that the cover is vibrating/buzzing because the transformers are slightly vibrating, I'd just take it off or maybe mount it back with some better way.
