Pioneer elite dv79 vs oppo 83/93

I'm trying to decide which of these players would be best for me. I would like a DVD/BD player that I can also use as a 2 channel CD player. The reviews on the Oppos are all in agreement that they are excellent DVD/BD players but some here on CP have said they prefer the Pioneer over the Oppo for 2 channel CD.
All of the Pioneers that I have seen are used which isn't really important if the player has been taken care of and used in a home and not a commercial environment. The Oppo 83 has been replaced by the 84 but the price is the same from the sources I looked at. The Pioneer does everything but BD and having owned one I know the CD SQ is excellent. I never played a DVD on it.

Is the video quality of the Oppo so much better than the Pioneer that it would make the difference in CD SQ insignificant? I watch movies more these days but I play a lot of CDs and sound quality is important.

Which one? Or should I just get both? Thanks. Don

I'd like to throw another player in the mix , Cambridge Audio Azur 650BD. I own it myself and owned Pioneer Elite DVD players as well as compared it to the Oppo. I almost pulled the trigger on the Oppo as I thought it was a very solid well performing player. But the Cambridge sounded like a high end CD player just like their stand alone players. Fast load times with Blu ray and top build quality. Not to mention it's also a DVD AUDIO and SACD player thats also TOP NOTCH.
Pioneer Makes incredible sounding cd players when using their Elite line. The DV79 is a DVD player not a Blu ray player. This is the only thing I don't like about this player compared to the others. For DVD and all music formats it will hold it's own no problem.

After spending one day with my Oppo BDP-93, I am tending to agree with you. For a budget player, the DV-79AVi is an amazing player. I need to run some more SACD through the Oppo though. I only had a chance to listen to one last night. For video, the Oppo is superb! And it is SO FAST! Coming from a Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD, I am blown away! The BDP-05FD was nice, and it played nice video, but it was SO slow... Drove me nuts! Loving the Oppo so far for Blu Ray and DVD playback.

If you are looking for one unit to do everything, including Blu Ray, the Oppo BDP-93 is the way to go. If SACD/CD/DVD-A are your only concerns, then go the DV-79AVi route. It doesn't do Blu Ray, but it does the other formats nicely. Me, I think I will end up leaving both in my rig!

Thanks for all the advice! Where is the best place to buy the Oppo? Amazon has it for $499 and I have free shipping. It's the same price direct from Oppo. The price isn't a real concern but for an additional $3.99 through Amazon I can have it tomorrow and their return policy is perfect. I'm seriously considering getting both. I will take a look at the Cambridge. Thanks again.

Rick88. Where did you find a new Elite for $199?

    Thanks EndersShadow.
I saw that one and I'm waiting for an answer to my inquiry. I've also made an offer on another one.

I ordered the Oppo. Should be here tomorrow.
