New System on the way. What do you think?

So, after an insane researching and shopping binge I have made the purchase.

I went with a ONKYO 609 receiver, Monitor 70's up front, Monitor 50's in the rear, CSII for center, and a PSW505 for the sub.

I pieced it together from amazon, newegg, shopbroadline, and monoprice.

It ended up being about 1300 (hopefully I didnt get ripped off)

I was going to go with the 9300thx because it had great reviews but the lure of better and more got the best of me in a big way. The wife keeps saying why didnt we just get the HTiB and I keep saying because honey this will last for our whole lives. Believe me its worth it.

We sit in a 23x15x10-20 foot ceilings. We also sit in the middle of the room.

My question is, we have limited room up front so where should I put the sub? I was thinking behind the couch because its a big L shaped beast with 45 degree cut and the 90 of the "L". That little pocket would put it directly behind us.

I was also wondering about bi wiring and using audysee to setup the sound. I know I would have liked the 709 with the ability to auto tune the sub but that was way more expensive. Most are saying set the cross over at 80hz. I dont know how to do that yet but thats the plan right now.

Any advice would be awesome!

I also got 14 awg wire and banana plugs.

We mostly do movies via ps3 and 46" vizio. But, who knows, if this sounds like I hope it will we might never leave the living room!

Super stoked

Nice! Sounds like you've got some packages coming your way - hopefully they'll all arrive around the same time.

For the time being, forget about "bi-wiring," and read up on it - essentially a waste of wire.

You might have to play the sub crawl game with a room like that - put the sub in the listening position (yes, right on your couch or whatever) and move around the room listening for the best low end, and place the sub there.

I'm not a fan of speakers like the 50s (towers) in a surround role, but to each his own. They may sound great to you. I prefer smaller speakers that can be mounted higher, but I understand that in an open layout, that might not be feasible, so perhaps it's the best option for you.

Welcome to Club Polk! Enjoy!

Thanks for the update. I know what your saying about the 50's but it was that or spend more money on stands/mounts and I figured I could muster up some smaller ones for 7.1 if wanted to.

Is there something that plays a constant low tone on the sub so I can move it and listen?

Once you get everything else in place, play some music that you're familiar with that has some good bass. Your receiver might have a test tone you can use for calibration, but music is usually preferred for doing a sub crawl, since it's more likely to cover a range of frequencies, rather than a steady tone.

Congratulations, you are off to a great start. Got a little chuckle out of your rest of our lives comment. I thought the same thing around December of last year. Seven months later that system is in my bedroom, and I have spent four times as much as I did on the original setup. My original rig was great to begin with. Something happened and I needed MORE!

all the well intentioned advice in the world cannot trump your experience with your gear in your room. Set it up, listen, kick the tires a bit, then if you find something your really like or don't like or have a problem getting to work post up.

Have a good time and welcome to Club Polk.
