get that old VHS tape transferred over to DVD... videotape degrades pretty fast.. dust, magnetic field, etc can all interfere with the recording on the tape.. esp if the tapes were of low quality to begin with.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Oh, there are even more arcane old formats that some of us still embrace...

Love your Yamaha gear, mhardy! And it goes without saying that when we were in college we would've killed for a good Tascam reel-to-reel. Somewhere I have some original reel-to-reel album tapes--those were something even on lesser equipment.

Where's the option for "I threw it in the dumpster 10 years ago"? The only reason that I can think of for still having one is that sometimes in my courses I might want to show an old documentary or foreign film that never made to DVD (we did this earlier in the semester but the lab at the university just put it on DVD). Can't think of any other reason to have one, sorry.Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

I'd probably still have a Mits HS-U70 and a BetaMax if not for a lightning strike once upon a time.

I have had Tivo for some time now, but I kept the VCR for its clock. No clock is one thing that bugs me about Tivo. Anyway, a year or so ago I bought a digital clock, and retired the VCR to some storage location in the house.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Have one upstairs and one downstairs - one for each cable box.
Sometimes there's two things I want to record at the same time.
Mostly used for time-shifting.
Not very impressed with the DVR/Tivo/etc. alternatives currently available,
would like a simple subscription-free DVR that works more like a VCR instead.
Even had a Sony Beta VCR until just a few years ago.cristo

I don't own a VCR
Yeah where is the " what the F*&k is a VCR?" ( I know what they are had many of them, but since DVD there has not been one in my house) -
Have a JVC S-VHS machine hooked up to the main viewing area plus a cheap VCR downstairs too. I rarely use them but still have family videos that I haven't put on other media and some classic movies (some not even available on DVD/Blu-ray) that I watch occasionally. The kids still like to watch a lot of the classic Disney's, etc. we have on VHS.
On a 28" CRT they're not bad but are bothersome to watch on a HiDef 58" screen. The S-Video connection on the JVC provides a better image than a composite input though. -
I've still got one, and use it regularly. I've got tons of movies on VHS that I don't really feel like replacing with DVD's...and plenty of movies that you probably can't even get on DVD. My VCR won't be going anywhere anytime soon. The nirvana inducer-

I have a very simple Sony VCR connected to my system, and another buried in storage somewhere. I have lots of video tapes I recorded over the years and need a way to watch them. I probably should transfer a few of the recordings to DVDs.
...but how do I insert my wax cylinders into the slot? -
I have a Sony HiFi vcr hooked up to the Sony 27" Trinitron tv which is used only as a monotor. Used everyday to change channel on the cable, connected to a Denon DRA-685 which is hooked up to Monitor 7A's. Still visit the thrift's to buy VHS tapes, 50 cents a pop on 50% of day.
