well, none of the poll choices really fit us. We have several, but really only use them for VHS HiFi audio - a pretty dandy analog format (FM audio recorded via helical scan heads) - close to 100 dB dynamic range and no need for noise reduction.

That's a Zenith VCR in the photo; bought that new ca. 1986 and it still serves well.

I have an old Mitsubishi Super Hi-Fi VHS-VCR. It is there for a reason and will not be going anywhere as she runs like a champ [still] after all of these years. It's my RTR and my cassette deck for compilations.

Mitsu Super VHS, because as a flag bearer of all things new, I had to have one. Tell me again why i bought it? Use it 2-3 times a year to watch old videos of me when I could run. (I use it to motivate me to get off the couch)
On a different note, mhardy, how is it you record as you talk of?
Someone in college confided in me that VHS was the perfect medium for recording audio. Never knew what the heck he was talking about.

How the hell is NO not an option. A guy my wife works with recently tried to give her a VHS about the polar bears at the denver zoo and she had to decline the tape because we don't have a player. Christ, I don't even have a regular dvd player anymore.

I have two, a Panasonic and a Toshiba pro-drum something or other with a nifty remote. We use them, infrequently, on old tapes we own and sometimes to video-tape something on down-converted stations we receive in our service package. We use the Toshiba mostly and have the Panasonic as a 'clock' in the bedroom?

I also have an old Sony of the kind Doro is talking about but the Dial is falling apart and the VCR is more or less 'dead'. A parts only unit--possibly repairable.

We often **** about Sony products nowadays but as far as consumer grade products, Sony was top gun with their VCRs (afterall, they created both VHS and Beta). I always found Sony always had extras on the technology side (such as their jog dial).

Since I had my own repair shop for a few years, I accumulated quite a few machines. It must have been either in 2004 or 2005 that I discarded about 125 of them, many were in working conditions, some fairly new but since the format had lost its appeal, it was not worhtwhile investing time or money to fix them. I kept a couple of them that are working due to their time lapse ability.

The TVR-VCR combo I had bought my sons in the early 90s is still working I believe. I still have a Sanyo VCR in the basement which I use only for the tuner for the odd time I want TV programming through the PJ. I have another one in the living room but haven't used it in years. Maybe a month or so ago, I picked up a mint JVC from my sister's place (she had just acquired a PVR after the holidays). I keep a few other ones in the bedroom where I keep extra gear for potential future projects.

I've never heard of anyone recording music on VHS.... hi fi or digital or whatever VHS format.

back in the day... it was common knowledge to use your Betamax home deck to record music on... it was pretty decent sounding...

My first VHS VCR was a JC Penny brand.. mono, cost me $700 finally thew it in the dumpster last year.. burned up power supply..

I remember trading music with a friend on vhs. We both had Sony high end machines and the music sounded great with high quality metal tapes. That was a long time ago...mid 90's????

    1) I am envious of all of the respondents with Mitsubishi S-VHS HiFI decks! :-)

    2) The Zenith and some of the earlier (as well as later/better) HiFi audio decks were designed as "audio/video" recorders (it even says so on the front of the Zenith, if you look closely at the photo I posted). BTW, both Beta and VHS HiFi formats were available; in fact, Sony pioneered the genre with Beta HiFi. Later, there were PCM converters to use VCRs to record digital audio, too! :-)

The Zenith has line-level inputs, an "audio recorder" mode (to blank the video), and variable record level (with peak-hold fluorescent level meters). In the photo I posted, the little h/k receiver's phono preamp is being used to amplify/EQ the output from the tt and fed straight to the VCR's audio inputs. Easy-peasy, and very good quality (even at "EP" tape speed; the bandwidth of the hifi audio tracks is scarcely impacted, if at all, by the very low linear tape speed, since the audio is recorded via helical-scan heads like the video).

I have also used the deck for live music recording (with reel to reel tape as a 'backup') with good results. The major problem is, of course, that the tapes as such are effectively un-editable. I've never tried to dub one, so I don't know how that would work out. Tape drop-outs can be an issue at EP speed, especially with cheaper tapes.

EDIT: and, yes, I am aware that this is a completely anachronistic not to mention goofy mode of audio reproduction! I'm an anachronistic kind of guy...

I used to use one of these on a daily basis for a local PATV station, LOVED it, we still did a lot of analog when digi was just a baby. I remember watching people on Final Cut or iMovie and blowing them away on what we could do on analog. Now once I really learned FCP, I never looked back, I miss doing a lot of that video editing.

But, I still do not own one anymore. I've got some great bootleg Nirvana VHS's I need to get on DVD.
