Hate to beat a dead horse with the these Oppo threads. Just real quick before I order it, I wanted to get additional thoughts. Is the Oppo 93 an improvement over my current BDP83? I'll be using HDMI to the Pioneer SC-07. Any real significant gains, waste of money or should I just keep what I have? Just wanted to see what you all thought.

If I decide to keep the Oppo 83 I'll be purchasing the modchip to make it region free.

Thanks alot.

According to this month's (May 2011, page 62) Home Theater review, it is a better player, with better build quality. They changed the video chip set to a Marvel Kyoto-G2 processor with 2nd gen Qdeo technology (whatever that is). To quote, "The results are spectacular."
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

Video chips are really only for dvd's ? Bluray is awesome and I would save the cash and put it towards a jvc rs40 thats selling for $3500 street prices

Well I thought video chips inside the bdps were mostly for upscalling dvds thats why I put a question mark . I think sherardp has a great bdp to begin with and I know he loves jvc projectors and he will eventually buy a new jvc rs40 or higher hence my suggestion .Well sorry if I come across as a troll for saying that

I bought the oppo 93 last month and sold it last week. Streaming via Netflix and blockbuster sucks. I use my ps3 for streaming and audio and video is much better on the ps3. (much better). I also have a oppo 83 and found I liked the 83 better for sd-DVD's. Blu ray playback is equal.

So all in all the only positive the 93 has over the 83 is streaming IMO.

Interesting. Which HDMI port (1 or 2) were you using for video?

One of the perks I was planning to use the 93 for was streaming. Did you get alot of video stutter or was it just difficult to navigate.?

The PQ wasn't as clear as the ps3 streaming. The ps3 Netflix looks like a sd-DVD and the oppo 93 looks like a VHS. Hopefully with a future firmware update Netflix and oppo can get the PQ better.

No stutter and it's very easy to navigate but the PQ streaming was terrible. I was using port 1 and also tried port 2.

Hoping someone with a ps3 & oppo 93 could also give their opinion on the two streaming. Check out AVS, there's some info on there about PQ streaming. Also VUDU via ps3 streaming has the best pq and sq so far to date, it has blu ray 1080p quality with outstanding SQ.

Port 1 but also tried out port 2. Go over to AVS and check out the Netflix streaming complaints.

I am not interested in the streaming, but am interested in the Bluray. The Home Theater review said port 1 uses the better chipset, and gives better picture quality than port 2.

That's correct port 1 is recommended. Blu ray playback is outstanding.

I'd atleast try it for yourselves and take advantage of the 30 day trial. I ended up selling mine on craigslist for $475 with only three weeks on the unit. It would've been about $25 to ship it back.
