Springsteen...I just don't get it.

I guess him documentary / release based on the 70's album "Darkness on the Edge of Town" is coming out. This is getting alot of publicity - yesterday there was an interview on NPR, there was an HBO special, and on and on. Just an opinion, but am I the only one who doesn't understand what is so 'great' or 'complex' or 'engaging' about his music...I know this is very subjective, but I have always viewed his music more as "pop", or even generic "rock", sounding.
Anyone else...

Personally,I don't find his music groundbreaking or thought provoking but he does put on one helluva rockin' live show.

I like his music, and his voice.

But, like you said, music is just way to subjective. I could take all you comments about Springsteen and apply them to pretty much any band since the early 90's.

Yes, live shows are his thing, and he's very good at it. My wife loves his music but him personally, not so much. She views this new one as just another money grabbing move aimed at his loyal fans. I'm in the middle on his music. I like some of his stuff, and can do with out alot of it too.

I own nearly two thousand albums...most of them some genre of R&R. Not a single Springsteen in the lot. I never understood his "iconic/visionary" status. Some of his songs are ok...but never cared enough to buy anything by him.

It is subjective and I couldn't disagree more....I have never considered Springsteen to be POP outside of a few songs that got too much airplay (but is it bad to have songs with a hook that a lot of people like?)....in my opinion, a couple early albums with the long story/songs were classics, and The River was amazing.....there aren't any bands I can think of that have used such a variety of musicians and made it work so well....for whatever reason, maybe time of my life, Springsteen's songs really hit me....the more tear jerking ballads especially....I think he is a very underrated guitarist.

I could probably name 10 songs that I would put into my top 100, and my musical tastes run from tango fusion to new rock to electronica.

I also think he is extremely bright and committed to political/social issues that I care about....which makes others angry. The documentary Blood Brothers really made me respect him as an artist.

So, I do have a man crush on him, being about the same age, full of energy, a red hot wife, and someone who can control a crowd better than almost any musician I can think of.....he's there, right behind Tom Brady.....ok, I need to go take a cold shower.

Guess I'm another hater. Well, I don't really hate his music or him, I just find it overly contrived and annoying in the same way I find all vocalists that sound like they're trying too hard to sound honest.

Other than that, I'm in the same boat as shack. Well over 2k albums and nothing by Springsteen.

I am not a huge fan either, but he is famous for putting on a good show ('specially in the 1970s into early 1980s).

Listen to the live version of Thunder Road that opens the 5-LP Live 1975 to 1985... it's enough to make you believe that it wasn't just payola that led both Time and Newsweek to put him on their covers on the very same week in 1975 (October 27).

I'm a huge Springsteen fan.....I've seen more bands than I can count and nobody comes close to Springsteen live.

I guess it's the difference of generation.....but, back when albums had a theme, told a story about people and life....I dunno, but I get it. Now, I don't agree with his politics at all, but I get what he writes about.

Now, the thing that has always killed me is that the recordings of his albums have always been TERRIBLE. Awful.

I think if you take The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness and The River and Nebraska....is probably the greatest string of consecutive albums ever. IMHO.....Born in the USA is also a great album, but, it's not my favorite and frankly is just a rehash of stuff that didn't make it on The River and Nebraska.

I was just looking for a nicely remastered version of Darkness, because although I'm not a huge Springsteen fan, Candy's Room is one of my favorite songs of his. I didn't really need a really expensive box set, DVD's, lost songs (that probably should of stayed lost!). I would of gladly paid $19.95 for a very nicely remastered version of the album.

The best version of Candy's room is on the live 75-85 box set.....In fact, if you get that box set, that's all the Sprinsteen you ever really need to have. That and Live in Barcelona...I'd get that just for The Rising Live and Incident on 57th Street.

Darkness, I don't care how you master it, will never sound good. Part is that the recording itself is poor....big the big part is that thos songs are meant to be heard live. For example, Badlands is BADASS live. On LP, it sounds silly.

Troy - I have the box set you referenced on LP. You are correct, live Springsteen is much better than the studio albums.

Ain't it the truth? Born to Run is just an awful sounding album... although it is rendered much more sonically palatable by the Denon DL-103 LOMC that's now ensconced in a tt in the living room hifi. That was a nice surprise.

Yup, the 75-85 set is pretty good.
I don't care for him at all. Never did. That said, "Born to Run" is easily in my Top Ten Greatest ROCK Songs of All-Time. How did he do that?

The only problem I have with Born to Run is that (to me) it's just too self-consciously anthemic; as if he took all of his musical and lyrical output to that point and distilled into a one song in a last-chance power drive, make-or-break run at a Breakthrough Hit... umm... yeah, like that.

That said, I really, really like She's the One on the same album.

For BTR...the BEST that dog is going to ever sound is the 30th Anniversary CD. I've got it, it's sounds OK. I've got the original vinyl and the CBS half-speed master and another reissue, they all suck. The half speed master sucks a little less.

The thing about BTR, back in 75, Springsteen is a 25 year old kid with two commercially unsuccessful albums under his belt...and he wants to make not just a good record, but the greatest record ever. There is a lot of reading on the subject and it's pretty heady stuff. Anyway, I will say I think it's one of the top 5 greatest albums of all time. Probably even top 3

And Jungleland live? Awesome. Simply AWESOME.

I'll give you all that Springsteen is great live, though you have to say that Troy in full Clown regalia playing a mouth harp would sound great too if he was backed by the E street band. That is an awesome band chock full of talent. just sayin

Brilliant songwriter, outstanding performer. Asbury Park and The Wild, Innocent..... feel so familiar to me with their stories.

That said, listening to his cover album of Pete Seeger songs makes me want to pull my ears into my neck by stapling my testicles to the chair and standing up quickly.

That's why I don't like music with lyrics, and if a good song has them, I ignore them. I couldn't tell you WTF he's singing about on that song, but he sure meant it whatever it was.
