Apple Tv 2nd Gen

Bought my new apple tv today. My neighbor has had their 1st gen for almost three years now. I have been wanting one for about two years now and finally went out and got the new one. 100 bucks it not bad at all and for the size of this thing!!! Amazing.

Out of the box and all hooked up and playing in 8 minutes. Would of been less if I did not have password protection on my network and having to type in my long password for that, and for my itunes account.

Pros:
Price: At a hundred bucks and for all you get its a great device.

Size, the darn thing could fit in my pocket if I wanted it to. Amazing at just the size.

Easy setup, this was a big thing as I said I was up and running in 8 minutes would of been like 5 without the passwords.

Sound quality, with all my collection in lossless I was hopeful that it would sound just as good coming threw the apple tv as using my dac connected to my laptop. And it was if not a bit better IMO. Seemed as if the instruments became a bit clearer.

Find Stuff, I love how easy it is to find whatever I am looking for plain and simple.

The Remote, I love this remote the beautiful metal body and simple layout of it. Almost makes me want to use it instead of my logitech remote.

The ugly:
Pandora, I am still upset that they have not included pandora in the apple tv. One of the most used internet radio stations and they can not include it? I do use airfoil to stream pandora to the apple tv with no problem. But I should not have to.

No upgrading, from what I see there is no way of adding anything to the apple tv weather that be a hd or a os, no biggie in my book for the os.

No hd, with apple removing a hd that is probably where the big cost cut was. Do not get me wrong I have no problem streaming from my laptop which is always open. But to be able to have things stored on the unit itself, I did like that. But again very quick streaming using my Linksys N router.

Only having HDMI and Fiber output is not a bad thing but I would of liked more. But this could be something I want because my receiver does not have HDMI so I had to use a Fiber line.

HD 720p Come on apple WAKE UP!! It is 2010 time to make this thing 1080P, on my dynex I do not notice a difference nor do I think I would on my fathers tv. Still this is a bad thing to hear. All though they may of done this because streaming full 108P content could exceed many peoples bandwidth.

Slow down, I have noticed a slight slow down in my network but I think I even expected that. I think the next upgrade will be a apple airport router for dual band wireless for steady speed.

Things I can not test, as where I live we do not get cable, nor fiber nor dsl. We have satellite internet which is very lagy and can not be used to watch movies, or tv shows or download large things. So i can not use my apple tv to watch netflixs or any of that good stuff.

All and all I love it, as I said there are some down falls but in the end it is a great device and with its fast speed to see my laptop as soon as I open itunes is great compared to the old one. It is a keeper in my book.

Thank you, after a few days with it I still love it. Just for giggles I rented a movie on it and it promoted me saying "Movie will be ready in 532 minutes" Ya I wish we had cable or Fios which would be better.

532 minutes? I have fiber here with 100meg speed. Hope mine is faster than that.

Wait, you have fast Internet speeds in Japan? Whoa! That's shocking news! Seems like something you'd mention in every post you make, if it were true.

    Oh wait, you do.

You should great little thing. I am thinking of setting up a computer in the closet with a 1tb hard drive and just have all my music on there for the apple tv to access. I have two laying around right now.

Correct me here if I'm wrong, but since you aren't using the netflix feature on the Apple tv, wouldn't the Apple Express have been a better fit?

Personally I'd go with the WD Live HD over an Apple TV. I'm a big fan of 1080p + HD audio.

No because you would not have on screen menues and you would have to control everything from your computer. Also would not be able to see my pictures and videos.

Sure I am as well but let me know when they start covering my apple lossless formart on my mac with over 860 full albums.

I'm smart enough not to get stuck with proprietary formats. I'm also stupid enough not to care about lossless music formats...MP3 ALL THE WAY BABY!

Also true. But until the past couple years, i've never had a system that was capable of showing me the quality difference..

I'm kinda in the same position as you because I live in the mountains and have satellite internet, which is sketchy at best. We have Wild Blue. I can't stream netflix and can barely Skype... couple second delays, cuts out at times.

Sounds like you are pretty stoked with your Apple tv. Rock on!

I always thought this was just another streaming device, but it appears to have some added functionality in that you can also get current TV programming on it. Does anyone have a link to a good source on what shows are available and how much they cost?
