haha yeah, i have been thinking a lot lately lol. I think that in my case the preouts are not really necessary. I think i'm going to be running satellites, or bookshelfs for quite a few years with me being in college. Switching to full size speakers for me means upgrading everything which isn't going to happen for quite a while. Right now i am very happy with the size Vs. sound with my mirage setup.

So then it's down to the Denon AVR-1911 and Pioneer VSX-1020 or Pioneer Elite VSX-30?

What are the differences between the vsx-30 and the 1020?

Feature-wise, they are almost identical. I think the VSX-30 has better amp circuitry, and probably slightly better DSP, DACs; it has PQLS 2 channel CD audio, usb photo playback, video adjustments. The 1020 has 6 HDMI vs 4 for the VSX-30. The 1020 has anchor bay upscaling, whereas the VSX-30 has 1080p upscaling but they don't say by who.

Given the close prices I'd probably take the Elite on instinct ;) But perhaps you Pioneer owners can explain some of these feature differences...

    VSX-1020 product sheet

And just for kicks...if we throw in the Denon ... feature-wise you lose internet radio, gain HD radio, and gain 10wpc. The rest is the same +/- different verbage.

Yeah, the Pioneer Elite sc-05 totally smokes what you are looking at getting. Mole' mentioned it, and for whatever reason you just ignored it. To be blunt, the receivers you are looking at suck in comparison. Just an honest FYI.

+1 on the Pioneer Elite recommendation. Best AVR I've owned.

Rather than playing the 'one-up-manship-game'. The Pioneer VSX-1120 is a nice middle ground between the 1020 and the ELITE ICE amps. It has many of the features of the entry Elites and a more powerful amp section than the 1020.

At $749 MSRP, I'm pretty sure you could find it on sale for less. But it seems like you've gone 1020 already?

Marantz SR7002. They are on closeout because the new 7005 just dropped. I have owned pio elites, denon, onkyo, hk, and yamaha. This is by far the best receiver I have owned IMHO.

Thank you. And I have till November to make a decision. I just think the elite would be overkill for my setup. I don't need lots of power by any means just good clean quality power and plenty of features. With satellites bigger isn't always better. But back on topic I'm really liking the vsx-30

+1 on the 1120, it's pretty much a vsx 33 without the 12v trigger. It'll sound better than the vsx30 and newegg just had them for 450!

Hmm yeah I saw that one too. Aside from the fact that it doesn't natively decode blu-ray audio formats, it's an awesome deal.

And even that isn't too much of an issue, since you just let your blu-ray player (or PS3) decode the DTS HD / Dolby True HD tracks, and send them to the receiver as multichannel PCM. The RX-V2700 HDMI accepts multi-channel PCM (8ch up to 24bit / 192khz).

    Otherwise 140w x 7 for $415 looks promising.
