I've been looking at Dual turntables, and have heard some pretty good things about several models. I remember them from back in the day too, and they were highly regarded back then. Here is a Dual CS 714Q I'm seriously considering.

Another model that I'm considering, and can get fully rebuilt with a new cover and base, is a Dual 1229 for $425. This from a guy who rebuilds Duals at http://www.fixmydual.com/

Any comments appreciated.

I've had dealings with Bill at "fix my Dual" and he's a straight up guy.
    Throwing in my opinion here...
For that money you can land yourself a much quieter table with better sound. The old Dual tables are a good "old" table but have a tendency to be noisy. They're also a very complicated table using a lot of moving parts. "old, many parts" complicated" = a potential for lots of maintenance and downtime. JMO.
I've got 1229, 1219, and a 1228 here right now. ALL of them need taken apart and gone through. The sound quality of these tables is better than average but....

Thorens would probably be a better "vintage" TT....

my 1229 runs well after a local guy overhauled it a couple of years ago. he had to do something to 'soften' the rubber drive disc (this design is most of the reason people consider them noisy) because he said he couldn't buy them anymore. does anybody know if this has changed?

I bought it new in 73' and it's been good to me. I think it's better than a lot of the 80's direct drive tables, but many belt drive TT's have usually been considered superior.

I'm pretty sure EG Russell still makes a good replacement idler wheel for them. I bought a couple this spring from a local electronics store and I still see them stocked on the wall display.
