PS3 settings

My receiver doesn't do HDMI so I have the HDMI from the PS3 going to the TV and then a Toslink from the TV to the receiver.

My question is this. The sub output from the OPPO dvd player which is 8 channel (5.1 in my case) is really strong. When I play BRs through the PS3, the sub output seems to drop off. I was watching Transformers and it just wasn't earth shattering (excuse the pun). In contrast, I put in I am Legend (DVD) into the OPPO and played a few scenes and the sub was very alive.

Is there really that much difference in output between 8 channel and the PS3 or is it possible I don't have the settings correct on the PS3? It showed it was playing in 5.1 but something just doesn't seem right to have that much of a difference.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Is your Oppo's audio running out to the tv, or straight to the receiver?

Any reason you're running the PS3's audio to the tv and then to the receiver? Seems like an unnecessary extra step, and might be detrimental to the audio, if it doesn't pass Dolby Digital. It might only do stereo PCM, and there goes the signal to the sub.....

Anyway, unless more details of your setup are known, it's hard to do anything but guess.

You also first have to make sure everything is calibrated properly. You can't just compare different default settings. So you have to run the calibration (usually test tones verified with an SPL meter) on your receiver. And if you are using analog outs on the oppo to the receiver, then you have to calibrate the player's analog output as well.

If using toslink for both, make sure each is set to bitstream to give you the most uniform results. And you should also just use the same DVD in both cases to compare. Since you can't access any of blu-ray's special lossless formats over toslink anyways, you just need to make sure that regular dolby and DTS are set up properly on each player.

It should be pretty clear on the receiver display what is being processed over toslink. List exactly what the receiver display says, and we'll have a better idea what's being passed over the optical link.

The Oppo is running straight to the receiver.

For the PS3, I guess I figured that is how I needed to do it. Maybe that isn't the best way. I wanted to get the Pic quality from the BR and still good sound. I'm open for suggestions. I thought there was a way to run the video to the TV and the audio from the PS3 straight to the receiver.

Eventually I'll upgrade the OPPO but for now I want to use the PS3. Just not sure if I have the settings right in the PS3.

...You can also try using optical directly from the ps3. Just make sure you choose the proper video and audio outputs from the ps3's menus. IIRC, the video and audio settings are seperate.

Are you using optical from the Oppo as well or analog?

    Strictly analog from the OPPO.

So I can run the HDMI to the TV for Video and use optical for audio to the receiver?

Yes, but you have to manually choose each output in the set-up menus.

And analog from your Oppo may be running 'hot' compared to the optical setting in your receiver. You have to calibrate both the receiver and the Oppo's analog section equally to get similar subwoofer levels.

Go optical, as explained above. There's no telling what that TV is doing to the audio signal with HDMI in and TOSLINK out... You should be able to calibrate your receiver inputs for your analog DVD and your digital BDP (PS3) separately, so that the output levels are comparable.

    Thanks for the input.

I will give it a shot tomorrow.

Yes, run an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. Also, you can run the component setup from the PS3 to the receiver. You won't really lose any image quality since the component can do 1080p.

That way, you have the receiver managing the output to the TV and the speaker, cutting out a loop.

I would leave the video over hdmi if everything is working properly. I believe you run into problems with things like DVD upconversion with component...

Actually, you're just eliminating some potential button presses on the TV remote when changing sources. You are adding the receiver between the player and the TV, complicating the chain, not simplifying it.

HDMI from PS3 to TV for video.

Optical from PS3 to AVR for audio. Go to PS3 setting, set audio output as optical & bitstream.

I'm having to do this now too because the HDMI ports on my Onk 876 have gone full-artard. Works completely fine.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

All seems well. Output is a lot better.

One question though. When I hit the select button to see what format it is running, it shows DD and multichannel. Should it read DD 5.1?
