Hi all,

Thought I would open this one up for the Polkies.

Genelex KT77 / EL34 (New Sensor re-issue) group buy - all payments (via check of Paypal Personal) required in by March 21, 2010:

Matched Pair - $80 shipped CONUS

Matched quad - $160 shipped CONUS

Matched octet - $325 shipped CONUS

All tubes will be matched by plate current first, then by gm results from Amplitrex AT1000 - shooting for 10% plate and 5% gm give or take - remember this is highly accurate testing to begin within so these matches will be tighter than factory at real world conditions.

Depending on the final size of the buy, turnaround time will be at least 3 weeks due to transit time of shipment from factory, testing, matching, and ship out.

2010 Polkie Genalex Group Buy list:

McShane's comments on the KT77 from New Sensor.

I'm curious about the Genelex branded tubes that New Sensor has put on the market as well. How good are they when compared to the EH, Sovtek and other brands New Sensor sells?
They are significantly better, without question. That's not just my opinion, I hear that all the time from customers.

Quote:
For instance is the KT77 really all that different than the EH EL34? What about the KT66 is it the same as the Sovtek or Tungsol version or is it closer to the original or even the Saratov version from a few years ago?
The KT77 is definitely different. For one thing, all the Genalex tubes use gold plated grids - and speaking of grids, the '77 grid must be wound slightly differently than the EL34s, since they bias slightly cooler.

They all use carbonized plates as well, and in the case of the KT66 it uses the proper sized brown base.

All the tube must use different cathode chemistry too. I certainly can't confirm that (I'm no chemist), but they sound so much more refined that the less expensive Saratov made tubes.

There are many who believe that the KT88 Genalex is every bit as good as the original, and a good number who think it's better! The KT66 is a killer, and while the KT77 results are just starting to come in, so far the reports have been superb.

Don't get me wrong, I think the KT-88 EH (as an example) is a VERY good tube. It needs a bit more bass energy, but it has the tightest an best bass control of any tube I've heard other than a good Ei KT-90. But trhe bit of missing bass causes some people to think the tube is too hot on top. You never hear that sort of thing about the Genalexes.

One EH tube that's just a steal is the 6CA7 though. It doesn't sound exactly like an EL34, it probably could be best described as a "baby 6550". The people who use them love them, and they are still a bargain.

The bottom line is that the Genalex reissues get the best construction materials and techniques, and it shows. It is more expensive though, which has been aggravated by the weak US dollar (in the USA obviously), the increasing cost of raw materials, and the increase in labor costs in Russia.

I'm slowly rebuilding an ST-70. Would be interested in a quad when I'm done, but not by your March 21 deadline. Will you be having future group buys of the reissue Gold Lion KT77/EL34?

What has been your experience with the KT77?

By the way, I noticed in your equipment list that you own a SoundValves VTP-101i. I too own one and purchased a prototype version from Joy and John Peterson at about the time the company was going belly up. However, I never received a manual/schematic. During my recent conversations with John (during parts purchases off Ebay) John steadsfastly tells me he cannot locate a manual/schematic for this model. Is there any chance you have them and could share a copy?? If you need it (for authentication purposes), I can send you a copy of my invoice from SoundValves.

This is my first tube amp, and it is not up and running just yet, so I have not experience, sorry.

I sent you a PM regarding the Sound Valves request.

Fellas, I have never given a thumbs up on a set of tubes in my life. I usually just prefer one tube or another, no big deal.

Now, if you notice in the first couple of posts, I ordered an octet of these reissue tubes. Got them a while back and never got around to putting them in because I was playing around with other tubes in my Anthem amps. Well, about three weeks ago, I went ahead and installed all 8 of them into the Anthems with no other changes made to the system. Let them burn in for almost the entire time [rig shut down and unplugged for lightning storms].

I have probably between 250-300 hours on them so far. I have to admit, out of all the tubes I have tried on the Anthems, these [by far] sound the absolute best out of all of 'em. The bass response is incredible and like no other tube I have tried. It made so much of a change in the response that all levels of listening have changed, whether it be loud as hell or rather low background music. The top end is smooth and not at all brittle, harsh or bright as some tubes I have tried end up doing. The sound stage is not changed that much but there is a slight improvement in imaging. Real good overall spectrum of frequencies and sound. Very nice buy and I will most likely order more for backup when these tubes' life has expired.

    Highly recommended.

Hold a pr. for me. The Norh amp just arrived a few hours ago. I need some time with it, etc. But it looks like I will have to try these if they are that good. I'll check back in a couple of weeks, but it looks like a pair of these need to be in the rolling box.

Hey, do you have another octet that will be as close in tolerances to the set I purchased? If you can make it happen, please reserve another set for me. I didn't realize you were already that low in quantities.
