so i have been looking around for some new Front speakers and a guy(somewhat) local to me has some up for grabs.

he has a few sets of them. SDA SRS in great condition, SDA SRS, SDA 1, SDA 2B and a set of SDA 2B is so-so condition. he said one of the tweeters needs to be replaced. $250 for that set. is this a good deal or should i look around some more.

here is his ebay listing for a set of his SDA SRS.

Seems to me the guy is on crack... The SRS are WAY overpriced given the overall condition and the fact they are not TL's...

SDA 2B's that need a replacement tweet is not a very good deal because you will really have to get two RDO 194's to sonically match. Now you are talking 350.00 For that much money they should be in excellent condition with the interconnect cable. It's a little high in my opinion.

I'd need to know more about their condition: are they in "so-so" condition because one of the tweeters needs to be replaced, or are they in "so-so" condition and one of the tweeters needs to be replaced?

If they are in otherwise great shape I'd say that 250 is a good deal, especially if you were going to buy the RD0's anyway, cuz then you're really only out one sl2000 which is only worth 20-30 bucks.

If they're all screwed up then it really depends how screwed up they are. That could be a bad deal if they're screwed up enough.

Did you see them when you were over there?

Also I don't know how well the SDA's will match up with your monitors... that's what you're planning on doing, right... replacing the M70's in your sig with these 2B's? If that's the case you may need to look at a different speaker.

What would you be powering them with.. that GFA 545?

yes i saw them in person. he has 8 sets of SDAs

they are so-so cause of the tweeter and on the front of one it has a scuff mark. nothing bad. i would say a 8/10. he had a set of SDA 2Bs that are 10/10 and he wanted 500 for them.

well my Monitor 70s are a lil messed up right now. so its get them fixed or buy some better speakers.

i have 2 Amp. the Adcom GFA-545 MkII and an Acurus 250x3. i would use the Acurus for these speakers

I understand SDA 2B's might not match your current speakers in play, and the particular set you are looking at may be damaged, but want to mention the following . . .

Stock 2B's are a fine speaker in their own right and mine performed well since I bought them brand new at the end of 1987, however . . .

--- stock SL2000 tweeters are harsh and (in my opinion) should be replaced (can be resold if working)
--- capacitors and resistors in the 20+ year old crossovers should be replaced no matter what.

If you are going to the trouble of rebuilding the crossovers, you might as well spring for the 2 extra 5.8uf caps needed to allow for the use of RDO198-1's and "TL" the beasts.

My point is, to bring SDA 2B's into a state where they are one of the best sounding speakers around, you should plan on spending . . .

--- about $250 for caps and resistors
    --- $96 for 2 new RDO tweeters
--- about $50 for Cardas binding posts
--- about $20 for Dynamat Extreme
--- about $10 for Mortite or other speaker sealing compound
--- about $70 for a new Interconnect Cable and connections

In other words, add about $500 and some time to your base cost of the speakers.

(If any of the Mid Woofers are damaged, plan on another $48 each to replace, and if a Passive Radiator is damaged, maybe $40 on the pre-owned market will buy one.)

LAST . . . I'm guessing you might pay $2,000 or more for a new pair of speakers comparable to what you will end up with if you buy, restore and "TL" Polk SDA 2B's.

I recently TL'd and broke-in my 2B's and all I say is WOW!! It turns into a completely different speaker, with a huge sounds stage for the speaker size. Worth every penny if you want awesome clear sound without a monster set of speakers filling your room space.

or buy them for 250.00 get a replaceent tweeter and enjoy a fine speaker

just saying, everthing listed can be done, but not required to enjoy a pair of 300.00 floorstanding speaker.
    Dodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
    Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
    ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
    Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
    Outlaw ICBM - crossover
    Beringher BFD - sub eq

Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!

Clever Sherlock ;) I do prefer SDA-2B's with fully upgraded XO's/TL'd to "STOCK" 1c's.....but not to my modded 1C's though. Comparing both modded speakers, they are close but the better mids in the 1C's give it the notch up.

    We Agree!

Line 2 of my original post was "Stock 2B's are a fine speaker in their own right and mine performed well since I bought them brand new at the end of 1987, . . . "

. . . however, 23-year old caps have most likely drifted off of their original values, maybe enough to make a fairly substantial audible diference.
