Good morning guys.I heard from a couple of board members(thanks) about theoretical placement of these surrounds but I want concrete info please.I am concerned about how HIGH the fx's would be on the wall. Here is the pic with my archway that I want to put them on.The speakers will be approx. 4 feet behind and 8 feet above my head. What do you guys think??? Eddie

Well, ideally, all speakers should have the tweeters at or near ear level in order to maintain continuity of the sound field. If you're going to go high, then get adjustable mounts and point them down towards the listening position.
    Turntable: Empire 208
    Arm: Rega 300
    Cart: Shelter 501 III
    Phono Pre: dsachs consulting
    Digital: Marantz SACD 30n
    Pre: Conrad Johnson ET3 SE
    Amp: Conrad Johnson Premier 350
    Cables: Cardas Neutral Reference
    Speakers: SDA 2.3TL, heavily modified

Ed, any good reason you cant mount the speakers on the side walls instead of the rear wall?

It's usually recommended for HT surround speakers such as these to place them at or above the listeners ears, although 8' is probably outside of the optimal height. Of course, this might be compensated by a greater distance behind the listening position.

Side placement, if feasible, might be better if this is 5.1. What's your configuration?
I use RTi series FXi3s for side surrounds in a 7.1 config, and they are about 7.5 feet off the floor, so about 4 feet above my ears, at about 9 feet to either side. They are about a foot or so behind my ears - just slightly behind me.

I have a 7.1 proc. and amp but probably want to stay with 5.1. M fiance has a 1.5 year old grandbaby so I want to move the nines out of harms way.Surr's onsideare not an option due to the room layout.I thought the lsi/fx's could be mounted on the archways with a 5 to 10 degree downward angle. It is extra work but the grandbaby certainly takes priority.I am open to other ideas and pictures would be nice. I may be able to mount them on the support columns for the archway. The only negative would be that half the fx's would fire into the kitchen/breakfast area....Thanks for the help on this. eddie

Real rooms and houses often present a challenge! I'd try them with the downward angle and see how it sounds. Maybe you can cut a few lengths of cheap wire and try out all your options.

I found a pair of lsi fx's on c.list for $360.The guy was moving in a couple of days. They are like new except for a tiny snag on one of the grills.I gave him $300 cash and got them home.I put them on my stands that hold my 9's.I am very impressed with the total amount of sound coming from them.I said I would stay at 5.1 but I wouldn't want to waste those 2 channels on the amp and the processor, would I???? I told my fiance the grandbaby must stay on a leash when she visits.Feel the love.Everybody have a great work week. Eddie

Do not mount them at ear level and the proposed location sounds good, just keep your options open.

As stated....what are you doing 5.1 or 7.1? That's pretty much the decision.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
