Me, me! I need an amp to power my surrounds when I get back into HT. If you decide to sell it to me can you tell me how much shipping will cost? I'll add it to the $60. My mother gave me **** last time because I wasn't home when the Rotel came in and she had to pay UPS $78 import charge. I was lucky my dad didn't answer the door:).

    $78??!?! Ouch!!!

Organ, was that $78 mostly for brokerage fees? I avoid UPS because of that. I just got my pre shipped by WoodyJacobs for about $32 usd. No additional charges or duties. There's a couple of ways of keeping the shipping costs down to the great white north eh! ;) Let me know if I can help.

I'll get a picture today, but what's this import bs?

I put 'gift' on the customs declaration, why would they hit you for SEVENTY EIGHT dollars? Wow.

It's probably nothing to do with duties or taxes, it's probably UPS's we'll automatically do the brokerage for you as a value service.

That's why I avoid UPS. If you do need to send ups, you have to state emphatically that you will perform your own brokerage or they will be more then happy to do it for you. After which you're on the hook.

A few friends had the cost of they e-bay purchases double because of this value service.

Best bet so far is to either send to a po box just across the border and pick it up yourself or US Post. The customs and duty people will inspect your package and add a bill for any duties or taxes that they deem appropriate.

    hope that helps.

I just took a look at the bill again and here's what's written...

    UPS Brokerage C.O.D.

    Duty: 0.00
    G.S.T: 14.14
    PST: 16.16
    Excise: 0.00
    Brok fee: 44.25
    Brok G.S.T.: 3.10
    Brok P.S.T.: 0.00
    FRT. COL: 0.00
    Permit: 0.00
    Total C.O.D.: 77.65

That's fu#ked. I didn't know UPS did this sort of thing until I receveived the package.

    Organ/Maurice,

How much was the Rotel? If you got it off of Russman for $100 usd (and you just beat me to it btw. ;) ), I can't see how they arrived at a $200 cdn price to charge you gst/pst. Even if they gave you a real crappy exchange rate of 1.5, I'm still not sure how they'd arrive at 200 unless they added the shipping or the brokerage fee into it. It'd be sick if they added the brokerage fee because they billed you gst for the brokerage fee again. You might want to ask them to explain how they got to that number.

Anyways, I'm told the magic number at customs is $60. Any gift in the $60 usd range is usually allowed through with no duties or taxes applied (emphasis 'usually').

    regards

    Dave

I INSURED it for $200 - but still on the customs form it was labled as 'gift'.

    This really pisses me off.

That may be where they got the $200 figure from then. Our gov't will still charge GST/PST at their discretion on gifts. It's definitely a pisser I agree.

    Phone,
I'm thinking they got it from that too.

    Russ,
Don't worry about it dude. That pre retails for $450CDN and to be able to get one used for just a little over $200 is pretty damn good to me.

Maurice, I bought an integrated from Sean(Venom) and got dinged the same ****. I bought a DVD from the Pearl Jam fan club, power cord from Signal cable and got dinged on both too. I've purchased from the U.S. before but the last few things have been **** **** on with fees. I won't be buying much from across the border anymore because of it.
